Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of any waste on a street or footpath. Some examples of fly-tips include: black bags, fridges, mattresses or building rubble.
Before you start
To report a fly-tip online you will need:
- The location of the fly-tip
- Information on the type of fly-tip such as size or contents
- An optional photograph (if it is safe to take one).
How do we deal with fly-tips?
We aim to remove all fly-tips on public land within two working days. It may take longer to remove the fly-tip if we are investigating evidence of the perpetrator.
Examples of public land include:
- Roads and pathways
- Pavements
- Public car parks
- Council owned parks
- Council owned alleyways/access roads
Fly-tips on private land
We do not have a duty to clear up fly-tips on private land.
It is the responsibility of the landowner to clear the fly-tip themselves. Should the fly-tip remain a concern, our enforcement team will notify the landowner.
Fly-tips on council housing land
Reports of fly-tips on council property land are sent to the housing team to investigate.
Fly-tips containing hazardous waste
Hazardous waste is reported to the City of London to investigate.
Evidence and enforcement
Where there is evidence of the fly-tipper, our enforcement team will open a case. The enforcement team will inform you that your report is being investigated further.
We focus on ‘rogue trader’ fly-tippers and local repeat offending hot spots.
How can I report an abandoned shopping trolley?
Abandoned shopping trolleys can be hazardous if they are left near moving traffic.
Most abandoned shopping trolleys can be reported online at Trolleywise trolley recovery. If the trolley is nearby the supermarket it belongs to, you should report it to the supermarket.
