The College of Engineering has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Director of Academic Programs.  

The activities of the Senior Director support the mission of the CoE to develop outstanding engineers and ideas that change the world. This position will support the CoE goals of:

There are 10 academic departments within the College with numerous programs and Centers with diverse research facilities.  The College of Engineering includes approximately 265 tenured or tenured track faculty and has a major economic impact on the both the University of Washington and the state of Washington. The College of Engineering supports student education of approximately 4,361 undergraduate and 2,030 graduate students.

The Senior Director of Academic Programs (SDUP) will report to the CoE Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct To College (DTC) Management Support
The SDUP will be responsible for overseeing DTC subcommittees on topics such as website, tools, and placement.  In addition, the SDUP will be responsible for managing the process used to place DTC students into majors.  The SDUP will co-chair the Council of Education Policy (CEP) faculty subcommittee on Admissions and Enrollment.

Engineering First-Year Program (EFYP)
The SDUP will oversee the EFYP, which includes teaching/co-teaching ENGR 101 Engineering Exploration, teaching/co-teaching ENGR 105 Introduction to Engineering, recruiting and training of teaching assistants for ENGR 197 workshops in calculus, physics and chemistry, recruiting and training of the Engineering Peer Educators for ENGR 101, and recruiting and training of the Engineering Design Consultants for ENGR 105.  The SDUP will work directly with academic departments offering first-year, discipline specific, introductory classes to develop, design and implement a rubric for assessing the effectiveness of the FYP with the intention of circling back to stakeholders to discuss gaps and implement improvements.  The SDUP will be responsible for making an annual assessment of the effectiveness of the FYP.

Advising and Student Engagement
The SDUP will supervise the activities of the Director of Advising and Student Engagement, which includes:
Advising all Engineering Undeclared students. Co-chairing the CoE department advisors Placement Coordinating Committee. Collaborating with all CoE departments on student advising and engagement programs. Attend monthly CoE adviser meetings. Collaborating with Undergraduate Academic Affairs and the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity during Advising and Orientation and other advising activities of incoming students. Providing support for the College of Engineering Student Advisory Council. Providing support for the vision, mission, planning, and programming for the Engineering Living Learning Community.

The SDUP shall be the CoE faculty representative at student engagement events such as, DTC Admitted Student Preview Day, Advising and Orientation, Engineering Kick-off, DTC Purple and Gold Mixer, and events organized by the CoE Diversity and Access team.  The SDUP will also serve as the UW’s representative on the Washington Council for Engineering & Related Technical Communication (WCERTE) attending and participating in the the fall and spring meetings and engaging with the faculty throughout Washington state regarding curriculum. The SDUP is responsible for implementing the overall vision for student-focused programs and creating a rubric for measuring the effectiveness of these programs.

ABET Accreditation Coordination
The SDUP will be the CoE faculty responsible for coordinating activities associated with ABET accreditation.  This includes developing College-level language to be used in academic department ABET self-study reports and coordinating collection and distribution of common required materials.  The SDUP will directly ensure that all academic departments are collecting pertinent data on an annual basis by hosting regular meetings with all departments, creating benchmarks and ensuring overall preparation for the next six-year formal review.

Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) Program
The SDUP will oversee the VIP program by assisting faculty with student recruitment and student registration in ENGR 297 and ENGR 497.

Engineering Communications Program (ECP)
In collaboration with the chair of HCDE, the SDUP will oversee the activities of the Director of the Engineering Communications Program.  This will include hiring of lecturers to staff the ECP, the development, implementation and assessment of upper division and graduate technical writing courses.

Industry Capstone Program (ICP)
In collaboration with the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, the SDUP will oversee the activities of the Director of the Industry Capstone Program. 
This includes:
Coordinating with CoMotion and the Attorney General’s Office to develop the ICP intellectual property agreement, and the student participation agreement. Serving as the CoE faculty representative at ICP events. Assisting the Director of the ICP in identifying faculty to supervise specific projects. Performing an annual assessment of the ICP.

COE Study Abroad
The SDUP will oversee the activities of CoE Study Abroad.
This includes:
Helping to develop strategic study abroad program development and enrollment goals Engaging and supporting faculty in the development new engineering study abroad programs.

Career Center @ Engineering
In collaboration with the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, the SDUP will oversee the activities of the Director of the Career Center @ Engineering. 
This includes:
Serving as the CoE faculty representative at Career Center events. Reviewing and approving course materials for ENGR 320/321 Undergraduate Engineering Internship. Providing support for CoE affiliated student clubs and teams.

Instructional Technicians
In collaboration with the Housing and Food Services (HFS) Manager of Program Operations, the SDUP will oversee the activities of the Instructional Technicians in Maple Hall (the Dabble Lab) and McCarty Hall (the MILL). 
This includes:
Ensuring that the technicians support ENGR 105 and all engineering related courses in the Dabble Lab and the MILL, Ensuring that the technicians support the activities of engineering student groups/project teams that use the Dabble Lab and the MILL, and Performing an annual assessment of ENGR 202D Introduction to Rapid Prototyping and ENGR 202E Introduction to Traditional Machine Tools.

Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:
• PhD in an engineering discipline or closely related field.
• Three years of experience teaching engineering undergraduates.
• Proven record and commitment to providing support to students and/or social programs that enrich the college experience.
• Progressive leadership and administrative experience at an institution of higher education or industry affiliate.
• A strong commitment to inclusion and diversity within a university and/or engineering setting.
• Ability to plan, direct and monitor the work of others.
• Substantial fiscal and fundraising experience to help increase the endowment for supporting programs, scholarships, and undergraduate students.
• The ability to foster positive relationships with faculty, staff and student population at various levels as well as state agencies and donors is crucial
• Demonstrated ability to anticipate, develop and communicate long-term vision, values and strategies that focus and drive an organization.
• Proven ability to create, communicate, achieve and drive superb results that energize and inspire staff and faculty while creating a culture of collaboration within direct teams and across organizational units.
• Proven ability and commitment to manage, develop, mentor and coach staff and colleagues, with a proven track record of creating organizational structure able to sustain growth and success.
• Strong interpersonal skills and customer service.  Poised, professional manner with the ability to express oneself clearly and emphatically in interactions with others in all forms of communications, verbal and written, one-on-one and group-setting, etc.  Ability to communicate in a direct and professional manner that engages dialog in a manner that resolves differences.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
