Here, a thundering waterfall foams and churns over craggy rocks, mist rising into the air. The dramatic vista—established by the tiny hikers overlooking the precipice and emphasized by the large scale of the canvas—is both a masterpiece of detail and a moving demonstration of the power of nature. A student of the Realist tradition taught at the Düsseldorf Academy, in Germany, Johann Wilhelm Lindlar would have created studies for this painting in the field and then painted the finished work later in his studio.
