What do we mean by 100% renewable electricity?

Electricity sourced from E.ON’s renewable generation assets, supply agreements with independent UK wind generators and the purchase of renewable electricity certificates. The electricity supplied to homes and businesses comes from the National Grid and DNOs.

Think of the National Grid like a bucket. All the electricity that’s produced in the UK goes in there, and customers like you take it out. We can’t guarantee all the electricity in the bucket is renewable, but we can make sure our portion is. We have a long history in renewable energy, going back to the development of our first onshore windfarm in 1991.

We buy certificates of renewable energy

Like most suppliers, we also buy electricity wholesale from the market. When we do, we buy certificates to represent renewable energy going to the grid.

We’re proud to be one of the only energy companies who actually produce our own electricity, instead of just buying it. In fact, our biomass power plants in Lockerbie and Sheffield create enough to power 100,000 homes up and down the UK. We start with natural material (normally waste wood), burning it to heat water: water turns to steam, steam powers the generator, and we make electricity. We don’t import our biomass from overseas, and we tend to use material that would otherwise go to waste – like offcut wood from sawmills.

We work with UK-based generators who create Ofgem-certified renewable electricity. Right now, we’re working with wind farms up and down the country: the Scottish Highlands, the Yorkshire Moors, the Sussex coast. Don’t underestimate the power of the wind - our partners’ sites can power up to 170,000 homes and offices. And in fact, we helped to build a few of them ourselves.

It might sound complicated, but the certificates actually make everything more transparent. The industry regulator, Ofgem, introduced the Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificates to help you track your energy back to a renewable source. Firstly, a renewable generator gets REGO certificates. 1,000 units (which is one megawatt hour) of electricity equals one REGO certificate. Then, we buy those certificates to make sure we match what you’re using.

How do REGO certificates work?

The industry regulator, Ofgem, introduced the Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) to help you track your energy back to a renewable source.

A renewable generator could be a wind farm, a solar site or anywhere else renewable energy is created. As long as they tick all the right boxes, Ofgem give them REGO certificates for the energy they create and – crucially – put on the grid. Let’s say you use 2.9 megawatt hours of electricity a year (that’s the average according to Ofgem). Between our partners and our own sites, we generate two-thirds of that energy already. So then we’d buy an extra REGO certificate to match what’s left over. We do the same for all the electricity going to all the homes we serve, and all the small businesses who are eligible.
