World Youth Skills Day 2020: Skills for a Resilient Youth
 
Today on 15 July, we celebrate World Youth Skills Day 2020. This year's theme is Skills for a Resilient Youth in the Era of COVID-19 and Beyond. The virtual event will take stock of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on skills development and explored how young people can respond to the economic crisis. On this occasion, ILO Director-General Guy Ryder will launch the ILO Toolkit for Quality Apprenticeships, Volume II for practitioners as well as announce the winner of the ILO Skills Challenge Innovation Call, a global competition to identify innovative approaches to address skills mismatch. Our newest partner, VVOB - education for development will speak more about its recent commitment to the Global Initiative on Decent Jobs during the event.

NEW COMMITMENT –  Building Ugandan teachers’ capability to skill youth for agriculture
 
On 8 July, VVOB - education for development  announced its commitment to Decent Jobs for Youth on strengthening Ugandan teachers' capability to skill youth for agriculture. Working closely with the Ministry of Education and Sports, the commitment aims at strengthening the initial education for teachers/instructors in three key areas: practical teaching experience, technical and entrepreneurial skills, and work-based learning opportunities.

On World Youth Skills Day 2020, HP Foundation has pledged its commitment to Decent Jobs for Youth to foster youth entrepreneurship and prepare them for the future of work by enrolling 1 million more users in the free HP LIFE e-learning program by 2025. To bridge the skills gap and help youth become more resilient in the era of COVID-19 and beyond, HP Foundation provides young people with business and IT skills training. These trainings are free of charge for start-ups, learners, and small businesses, and are provided through HP LIFE.

FAO is offering a free online course on “Promoting youth employment and reducing child labour in agriculture.” The course will explain how to strengthen the impact of child labour reduction and youth employment policies and programmes, by emphasizing the continuum and overlap between the two objectives. In the frame of the ‘Boosting decent employment for Africa’s youth’ partnership between INCLUDE, IDRC and Decent Jobs for Youth, a series of virtual roundtables were organized among the eight teams conducting in-depth research on the topic and invited guests. The first virtual roundtable discussion explored the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on youth employment in Sub-Saharan Africa and highlighted the most and least impacted sectors in which youth are represented. Side-event during the High- level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 
Decent Jobs for Youth participated in a High- level Political Forum side-event on the economic exclusion of young people in times of crisis, organised by the Kingdom of Belgium along with the UN Youth delegates from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Kenya, Mexico, Sweden and the Netherlands, in collaboration with UNMGCY and the European Youth Forum.  Sukti Dasgupta spoke at the event. A webinar on ‘Promoting Decent Employment for African Youth as a Peacebuilding Strategy’  was organized by INCLUDE for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Sustainable Economic Development Department (DDE).
