Overview

We have trialled uses of 5G connectivity in agriculture and aquaculture to increase productivity and reduce environmental impact.

The agriculture and aquaculture workstream of the 5G RuralDorset project was led by Wessex Internet. This part of the project had two main aims:

To build a 5G network which works for UK agriculture/aquaculture: affordable, reliable, interoperable
To build a 5G ecosystem within UK agriculture and aquaculture

One of the biggest obstacles facing UK farmers in adopting new technologies is poor connectivity around the farm. We looked at identifying how 5G and its roll out might be able to provide a step-change in the industry. 5G may be the answer to solving current connectivity issues; providing a standardised, affordable, open innovation platform to allow optimisation of current technologies. 5G might also enable a new revolution of emerging technologies to make automation a realistic prospect within the next few years.

Use cases

Connecting agricultural/aquaculture communities together with connectivity providers will help optimise agri-tech and aqua-tech into the future. Our project focussed on three main trials to demonstrate how 5G could help industry in the future.
