MAYOR CANTRELL ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT REACHED ON 'FAIR SHARE' INITIATIVE, FUNDING FOR INFRASTRUCTURE
NEW ORLEANS - Mayor LaToya Cantrell released the following statement, marking the successful completion of negotiations with tourism leaders and state and local lawmakers to secure critical infrastructure funding estimated to generate more than $200 million over five years:
"We have a deal - and we are being true to our word: The people of New Orleans are getting more of their fair share, with critical revenue being directed towards our infrastructure at a time when the need is dire," said Mayor Cantrell. "I'm proud to say we found a way to get to a 'win-win' that secures vital funds and unprecedented recurring revenue, without ever losing sight of the City's best interests in the long run. It wasn't an easy road to get here, but it was far more important that we get this deal done right - than that it get done in a hurry.
"The need remains the need, and there remains a gap between what we're getting and what we ultimately have to have - but this is a vital first step, and a huge win for the people of New Orleans. This puts us on a sustainable path to making investments in the basic infrastructure needs of the City.
"This deal represents not only hope for reinvestment in our infrastructure, but also a more clear-eyed and responsible approach to transparency and accountability when it comes to our tourism industry. The safeguards put in place with this agreement will improve oversight and accountability at the local level, and protect the City's tax interest moving forward.
"We were told it couldn't be done. We were told not to try. And we stand here today with a commitment of $200 million more than we have ever had to invest in the infrastructure our people and all of our industries depend on."

1 pound carrots, sliced in half lengthwise
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons good olive oil
2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
2 tablespoons good whole grain mustard

2 tablespoons mellow white miso
2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar

Crushed red pepper, to taste (optional)

Directions
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Next, make the glaze by whisking together all of the ingredients, except the carrots, in a cast iron skillet or baking dish. Add the carrots and toss them in the glaze until they are evenly coated. Roast for about 35 minutes, removing them halfway through to toss the mixture around to ensure the glaze is well incorporated into the carrots. PATRICE FISHER & ARPA, LATIN JAZZ ENSEMBLE Latin jazz harpist, PATRICE FISHER favors the music of Brazil and Cuba, saying that, not only is the harp 'comfortable' harmonically with the music, but that she herself is drawn to the rhythmic complexities and syncopations: "that's what makes you want to dance." Patrice is a graduate of Tulane University and University of New Orleans. She lives in New Orleans, where she has been composing and performing since the 1980's. She has also appeared at many international jazz festivals with her group, "Arpa," in locations such as Germany, Brazil, Mexico and Guatemala. Patrice has 15 CDs of original music, the latest being "Resilience." She has performed for more than 30 years at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Patrice also performs Celtic music and is director of the New Orleans Celtic Harp Ensemble. Patrice regularly performs throughout the world as a guest artist with international jazz musicians. "An unexpected delight!" raves David Fricke of Rolling Stone Magazine. Gene Scaramuzzo of Gambit newspaper says "There are many sides to this local composer/harpist. It's not unusual to see her play a classical gig in the morning and a music club at night. Strong rhythms form the undercurrent of her instrumental music with Arpa."

The Institute for the Study of War and Democracy with the generous support of the Strake Foundation is delighted to host best-selling author Nigel Hamilton for a presentation on the final book in his "FDR at War" trilogy.
Just as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was proven right by the D-Day landings he had championed, he was found to be mortally ill in the spring of 1944-the architect of a victorious peace that he would not live to witness.
Using previously unpublished documents and interviews, Hamilton rewrites the account of WWII strategy given by Winston Churchill in his memoirs. Seventy-five years after the D-day landings, we finally get to see, close-up and in dramatic detail, who was responsible for rescuing, and insisting upon, the great American-led invasion of France in June 1944, and why the invasion was led by General Dwight Eisenhower.
As FDR's D-Day triumph turns to personal tragedy, we watch with heartbreaking compassion the course of his cardiovascular disease, and how, in the months remaining to him as US commander in chief, the dying president attempted at Hawaii, Quebec, and Yalta to prepare the United Nations for an American-backed postwar world order. Even on his deathbed, FDR was the war's great visionary.
Brought to you by the Institute for the Study of War and Democracy with generous support from the Strake Foundation, the reception and presentation are free and open to the public but please register to attend.
For more information or to register, call 504-528-1944 x 412. If you can't make it to the Museum, watch the presentation at

Since the founding of the United States, American painters have sought to capture the essence of the country on canvas. From Sea to Shining Sea: 200 Years of American Art presents works that span the first two centuries of our rich history, highlighting the variety and strength of American artistic achievement from the colonial era through World War I.
Opening this spring at M.S. Rau's French Quarter gallery, the comprehensive American Fine Art exhibition features paintings, watercolors, and drawings from over 60 artists. Among the most well-known are John Singleton Copley, Gilbert Stuart, Frederic Edwin Church, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, Mary Cassatt, Childe Hassam, and Edward Hopper.
Together, the works on display represent the wide variety of styles that have developed in our country, ranging from Colonial Art to the Hudson River School and Tonalism to American Impressionism and the Ashcan School. Together, they successfully capture the cultural moment of their respective ages, perfectly defining on canvas the character and very essence of American life throughout the centuries.

Indigo Strings is a piano trio plus vocals. Think that sounds classical? It ain't necessarily so. A unique ensemble comprised of piano, violin and cello, topped off with a vibrant soprano presents the Great American Songbook at its best. This confluence of classical training, the influence of Tin Pan Alley and the heat of New Orleans brings out the best of the American Classics.
Starting as a piano violin duo in 2015, Indigo Strings brought a new twist to hit songs of the '30s, '40s and '50s. Expanding to include soprano and cello, the foursome evolved into a tight ensemble with a jazzy vibe. Audiences in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and the Gulf Coast have tapped their toes to the tunes of Indigo Strings, delighting in the music of years gone by.

Bush and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. She also piped for several Rod Stewart performances in the Louisiana Superdome. In her work as a music therapist, Marta has been fortunate to meet and ultimately be influenced by many musicians from the early eras of jazz, swing and gospel. Listen closely and you may sense these many flavors of music coming from the piano.
Anne Hibbs is a professional violinist and teacher with a passion for live performance and helping others find their own music. After winning scholarships and earning degrees from Louisiana State University and Loyola University in performance, Anne toured throughout Europe as a soloist with Loyola's chamber orchestra. A few years later, she met up with a man she had gone to grade school with and had a crush on--Hank Miller. He was home from the Marines and seemed to be the perfect match for Hilda's needs - a husband for her, a father for her young children and a provider for the whole family. Little could she know that their passion would end in divorce, and 30 days later, Hank would be convicted of murder and sentenced to fifty years in prison. For the next twenty years, Hilda went on with her life, trying to do her best to raise her family and further her own career. But then Hank began calling and didn't stop until she agreed to see him in prison and, she again fell madly in love with him and remarried him--in spite of the shackles that bound him.

Friday, May 10 marks the opening day of the city's newest festival- the
Public Health Film Festival of New Orleans. A collaborative effort between Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, 102.3 FM WHIV, and the Southern Center for Health Equity, the film fest (F-NO for short) aims to "...foster discussions on a variety of health issues while honoring filmmakers who advocate for much needed change."
"It's kind of a shared vision," says David Roston, Communications and Dissemination Manager for the Tulane Prevention Research Center and board member/radio host at WHIV. Both organizations had expressed interest in doing a film festival concerning public health, but realized coming together would be more effective. "We all got together and decided that it's better to have one film festival instead of competing festivals," says Roston.
Screenings will be held this first year at the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine on Canal Street and focus on a variety of topics "The film festival is meant to educate and inform through these films, but also foster discussions," says Roston, listing subjects as diverse as reproductive justice, HIV and AIDS, veterans health, gun violence, and the role of water protectors.
The festival will also feature a large number of New Orleans and Louisiana-based directors, "This year we searched within our own network of filmmakers that we're connected with to be a part of this film festival," Roston says, but hopes that in future years the festival may have a more national presence with a formal submission process and even a jury panel.
Some films of note include Kief Davidson and Pedro Kos' Bending The Arc about Dr. Paul Farmer's humanitarian work against disease in Haiti and the documentary Bayou Bridge Pipelinefrom director Alexander Glustorm about the water protectors leading the protest against Energy Transfer Partners' Louisiana project.
Another short documentary debuting at the festival will be Katie and the Black Robin Hood from directors John Richie and Alessandra Giordanno which focuses on the New Orleans public defenders and how the convicted are portrayed in front of judges during sentencing. "They're making films about [the convicted persons] to show their lives and who they are and where they come from and what their environment was to create this more humanistic story about who they are," says Roston,"We want people to know what's going on and to be informed about this and to get together to do something about it."
And it's not just films. There will also be a number of panels throughout the weekend focuses on many of the issues touched upon in the films. "We're very fortunate to have local filmmakers join the panels," Roston says. "But we'll also have experts in the field coming in to talk about these different issues, [as well as] individuals from the different communities that are affected by the topics that are portrayed in the films."
Starting a festival is hard, especially in a city that's known for holding multiple ones every weekend. "We just want people to show up and to be open to exploring some topics that they might not be familiar with," says Roston, expressing hope that the festival can serve as a space for people with different backgrounds to come together that otherwise might not be able to have these sorts of dialogues.
And as far as the future is concerned?
"Who knows," Roston says, "Each year we just want to continue to grow and expand. There are endless possibilities."

A Depression-era comic masterpiece, The Great Big Doorstep centers on the Crochets, a Cajun family who live in a ramshackle house between the levee and the Mississippi River. The Crochets dream of one day owning a stately plantation befitting the magnificent cypress doorstep they have salvaged from the river and proudly display outside their humble home. Written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett (writers of It's a Wonderful Life and Parenthood), and based on a book by Louisiana writer E. P. O'Donnell.
The memorable characters in this novel have their own concerns: the patriarch, Commodore, is full of wild bravado as he fluctuates between scheming, laboring, and malingering; his wife reigns as the queen of retort, though toughened by years of making do and doing without.

Oi! This grand ol' musical comedy was hailed, "the freshest and funniest musical to hit Broadway in ages". Me & My Girl exploded in London's West End where it entertained audiences for 8 years as well as 3 years on Broadway. This multiple Tony & Olivier award winning show whisks you back to the glittering 1930s, where the aristocratic Hareford family are seeking the legitimate heir to the title of Earl. Bill Snibson, a common-as-muck Lambeth cockney turns out to be the long lost Earl of Hareford, and chaos ensues as Bill does his best to learn the art of being posh. With rousing song & dance production numbers and side splitting physical comedy, audiences will be "doin the Lambeth Walk" long after the curtain comes down.

Wristbands are $15 each. They may be purchased either in the wine shop (early entry see below) or at the BBar inside Bacchanal on the day of starting at noon. Each wristband can be used to receive $5 off the purchase of a bottle of wine on the day of.
Limited supply of wristbands will go on sale Monday, May 6th at 11AM in the Wine Shop. They are not available for over-the-phone sales nor is there a way to purchase these online. These wristbands will allow the user to get in and taste at 2pm (half hour before it's open to public).
WRISTBANDS: HOW THEY WORK:
With the Rosé Fest wristband, you can take part in Bacchanal's 10th Annual Rosé Fest. There will be 50+ varieties of Rosé offered both upstairs and in the courtyard. The tasting starts at 2:00pm if you have a pre-sale wristband and 2:30 for wristbands bought at the door the day of and lasts until 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2018. Here are some helpful hints for navigating the festivities:
COME EARLY to beat the crowds, avoid waiting on line, and guarantee that you'll get to taste all the Rosé your heart desires. If there's a line at the door, this means we are at capacity inside, and this wristband doesn't get you around it. (Don't worry, if there is a line, it generally goes fairly quickly.)
Luckily, we open at 11 a.m. so the earlier you arrive, the easier it will be to get in.
BRING YOUR ID. You'll need it to enter the building whether you are coming for the festivities or just to enjoy the beautiful day, music, and food.
Bring the family and enjoy free movies every Saturday night in May at Heritage Park in Kenner's Historic Rivertown! No pets or outside food and drink, please. See their schedule below.

Figure drawing is one of the oldest and most valuable artistic traditions. In this course, you will be working with a nude model, which is an invaluable asset to aspiring and established artists alike. Drawing a model from observation develops and broadens one's perceptual drawing skills. Through this experience students will further their understanding of the proportional relationships and rhythms of the body and natural form
Two of New Orleans most talented and unstoppable performers have teamed up as a dynamic duo to present Marquee - an ode to the trail blazers of the New Orleans cabaret. Brought to you by Vinsantos, LadyBEAST, and Le Petit Theatre - this heartwarming show gives a window into the history of New Orleans cabaret from the 1890s through the 1950s.
