You Will Not Abandon My Soul

A (A)Miktam[a] of David.

16 Preserve me, O God, for in you I (B)take refuge.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    (C)I have no good apart from you.”

As for (D)the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
    in whom is all my delight.[b]

The sorrows of those who run after[c] another god shall multiply;
    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
    or (E)take their names on my lips.

The Lord is (F)my chosen portion and my (G)cup;
    you hold my (H)lot.
(I)The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

I bless the Lord who (J)gives me counsel;
    in (K)the night also my (L)heart instructs me.[d]
(M)I have (N)set the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my (O)right hand, I shall not be (P)shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my (Q)whole being[e] rejoices;
    my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to (R)Sheol,
    (S)or let your (T)holy one see (U)corruption.[f]

11 You make known to me (V)the path of life;
    in your presence there is (W)fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are (X)pleasures forevermore.

You Will Not Abandon Me to the Grave

Heading

A miktam[a] by David.

You Are My Lord

Guard me, O God, for I take refuge in you.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord.
I have no good apart from you.”[b]
The holy ones who are in the land are glorious.
All my delight is in them.
Those who chase after another god will increase their sorrows.
I will not pour out their drink offerings of blood.
I will not take up their names on my lips.

You Will Not Abandon Me to the Grave

Lord, you are the cup that has been given to me.
You have secured an allotment for me.
The property lines chosen for me fall in pleasant places.
Yes, a delightful inheritance is mine.
I will bless the Lord, who guides me.
Even at night my heart[c] instructs me.
I have set the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad,
and my whole being[d] rejoices.
Even my flesh will dwell securely
10     because you will not abandon my life to the grave.
    You will not let your favored one[e] see decay.
11 You have made known to me the path of life,
    fullness of joy in your presence,
    pleasures at your right hand forever.

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 16:1 The meaning of miktam is uncertain. It may mean a golden psalm or a choice piece or a psalm inscribed on a tablet.
  2. Psalm 16:2 The Hebrew of verses 2–4 is difficult and may be understood in more than one way.
  3. Psalm 16:7 Literally kidneys. In Hebrew the word kidneys has some of the same connotations that heart does in English.
  4. Psalm 16:9 Literally my glory. A few manuscripts read liver, which in Hebrew idiom parallels heart as a center of emotion.
  5. Psalm 16:10 The Hebrew word hasid refers to a person who receives favor or distributes mercy. Here it refers to Christ, but it is not capitalized because it does not become one of his messianic titles.

Una herencia escogida

Mictam de David.

16 Guárdame, oh Dios, porque en ti he confiado.

Oh alma mía, dijiste a Jehová:

Tú eres mi Señor;

Jehová es la porción de mi herencia y de mi copa;

Bendeciré a Jehová que me aconseja;

A Jehová he puesto siempre delante de mí;

Se alegró por tanto mi corazón, y se gozó mi alma;

Mi carne también reposará confiadamente;

11 Me mostrarás la senda de la vida;

En tu presencia hay plenitud de gozo;

Delicias a tu diestra para siempre.(C)

The Time of the End

12 “At that time shall arise (A)Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And (B)there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, (C)everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. And many of those who (D)sleep in (E)the dust of the earth shall (F)awake, (G)some to everlasting life, and (H)some to shame and everlasting contempt. (I)And those who are wise (J)shall shine like the brightness of the sky above;[a] and (K)those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.

12 Then at that time, Michael, the great prince who stands over your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress that has not happened from the first time that there was a nation until that time.

At that time your people will be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. Many who are sleeping in the dusty ground will awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame, to everlasting contempt. Those who have insight will shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who bring many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever and ever.

11 And every priest stands (A)daily at his service, (B)offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, (C)which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ[a] had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he (D)sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time (E)until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering (F)he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,

16 (G)“This is the covenant that I will make with them
    after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
    and write them on their minds,”

17 then he adds,

(H)“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

The Full Assurance of Faith

19 (I)Therefore, brothers,[b] since we have confidence to enter (J)the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by (K)the new and living way that he opened for us through (L)the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have (M)a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts (N)sprinkled clean (O)from an evil conscience and our bodies (P)washed with pure water. 23 (Q)Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for (R)he who promised is faithful. 24 And (S)let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 (T)not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and (U)all the more as you see (V)the Day drawing near.

11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices,(A) which can never take away sins.(B) 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins,(C) he sat down at the right hand of God,(D) 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.(E) 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect(F) forever those who are being made holy.(G)

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies(H) to us about this. First he says:

16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
    after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
    and I will write them on their minds.”[a](I)

17 Then he adds:

“Their sins and lawless acts
    I will remember no more.”[b](J)

18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

A Call to Persevere in Faith

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence(K) to enter the Most Holy Place(L) by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way(M) opened for us through the curtain,(N) that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest(O) over the house of God,(P) 22 let us draw near to God(Q) with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings,(R) having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience(S) and having our bodies washed with pure water.(T) 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope(U) we profess,(V) for he who promised is faithful.(W) 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,(X) 25 not giving up meeting together,(Y) as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another(Z)—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.(AA)

Christ’s Sacrifice Is Sufficient

11 In the one case, every priest stood ministering day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which are never able to remove sin. 12 In the other case, this priest, after he offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God. 13 Since then he has been waiting until his enemies are made a footstool under his feet. 14 By only one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being sanctified.

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies in Scripture[a] to us, for first he said:

16 This is the covenant I will make with them
after those days, says the Lord.
I will put my laws on their hearts
and I will write them on their mind.[b]

17 Then he adds:

And I will not remember their sins and their lawlessness any longer.[c]

18 Now where these sins are forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin.

Confidence Through Christ

19 Brothers,[d] we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place through the blood of Jesus. 20 It is a new and living way he opened for us through the curtain, that is, his flesh. 21 We also have a great priest over the house of God. 22 So let us approach with a sincere heart, in the full confidence of faith, because our hearts have been sprinkled to take away a bad conscience, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold on firmly to the confession of our hope without wavering, since he who promised is faithful.

Do Not Keep On Sinning

24 Let us also consider carefully how to spur each other on to love and good works. 25 Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have the habit of doing. Rather, let us encourage each other, and all the more as you see the Day[e] approaching.

  1. Hebrews 10:15 The Greek term for testifies appears six more times in this letter (Hebrews 7:8,17; 11:2,4,5,39). Each time it clearly implies by usage and context that it is referring to testimony in Scripture.
  2. Hebrews 10:16 Jeremiah 31:33
  3. Hebrews 10:17 Jeremiah 31:34
  4. Hebrews 10:19 When context indicates it, the Greek word for brothers may refer to all fellow believers, male and female.
  5. Hebrews 10:25 Judgment Day

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

Jesús predice la destrucción del templo

(Mt. 24.1-2; Lc. 21.5-6)
