NEW ORLEANS - The NOPD will join other law enforcement agencies across the U.S. in this year's national "Click It or Ticket" seat belt enforcement campaign, which will take place May 20-June 2, 2019.

As part of this campaign, NOPD officers will coordinate highly visible seat belt enforcement.

According to NHTSA, in 2017, there were 10,076 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the United States. In that same year, 55 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6 p.m.-5:59 a.m.) were not wearing their seat belts. That's why one focus of the Click It or Ticket campaign is nighttime enforcement. Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement, writing citations day and night.

"The Click It or Ticket campaign is so important because it raises awareness about seat belt safety during the time period when seat belts are least used," said NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson "With an increased number of cars flooding the streets due to the Memorial Day holiday, it's imperative we get the word out about the importance of seat belt safety."

Ferguson said that he hopes this enforcement crackdown makes people more aware to the dangers of unrestrained driving.

"If you know a friend or a family member who does not buckle up when they drive, please ask them to consider changing their habits," he said. "Seat belts save lives, and everyone-front seat and back, child and adult-needs to remember to buckle up every trip, every time."

From Sea to Shining Sea: 200 Years of American Art
Free
Register
Since the founding of the United States, American painters have sought to capture the essence of the country on canvas. From Sea to Shining Sea: 200 Years of American Art presents works that span the first two centuries of our rich history, highlighting the variety and strength of American artistic achievement from the colonial era through World War I.

Opening this spring at M.S. Rau's French Quarter gallery, the comprehensive American Fine Art exhibition features paintings, watercolors, and drawings from over 60 artists. Among the most well-known are John Singleton Copley, Gilbert Stuart, Frederic Edwin Church, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, Mary Cassatt, Childe Hassam, and Edward Hopper.

Together, the works on display represent the wide variety of styles that have developed in our country, ranging from Colonial Art to the Hudson River School and Tonalism to American Impressionism and the Ashcan School. Together, they successfully capture the cultural moment of their respective ages, perfectly defining on canvas the character and very essence of American life throughout the centuries.

NEW ORLEANS  the City announced that its curbside recycling program will continue; however; effective Saturday, May 18 in an effort to simultaneously improve the marketability of recycled items and reduce contamination, Plastics #3 through #7, wax board (juice boxes/milk cartons) and plastic bags will no longer be accepted by its collection contractors or at its Recycling Drop-Off Center on Elysian Fields Avenue.

Recently, Metro Services Group, one of the City's collection contractors, received notice from its recycling processor, Republic Services, that it would suspend acceptance of items from residential, single stream, curbside collections effective May 17. Republic citied rising costs as a result of China's ban on the imports of previously accepted types of recyclable materials and changes in contamination level requirements in the global market as the reason for the indefinite suspension.

This announcement required a rapid response by Metro Service Group to secure a change in processors. Although alternative arrangements were successfully completed, the suspension by Republic Services highlighted the current recycling situation on the national, regional and local level.

"We recognize just how important our recycling program is for our people and our city, so we worked alongside Metro, the local business community and our national resilience network to find a solution," said Ramsey Green, Deputy CAO for Infrastructure and Chief Resilience Officer.

Recycling is facing significant challenges; however, it is important to recognize the environmental and economic benefits that result from refusing unnecessary items, reducing the amounts and types of items purchased and reusing items. Recent articles on recycling note that the majority of the material collected in recycling programs remains in the United States and are used for feedstock in the production of consumer goods.

Green added: "We must all do our part to reduce contamination to assist collection, processing and manufacturing companies until new and expanded markets are developed. Although contamination from our area has not exceeded generally acceptable levels, it can be reduced further. It is our hope that these actions will assist in extending the life of the City's recycling programs."

NEW ORLEANS' DEGAS HOUSE
DISTINGUISHED AS A FRENCH LANDMARK
Only the second house in U.S. to receive this designation

New Orleans, LA (May 16, 2019) - In a time when the world mourns the devastating damage to the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, New Orleans has reason to be proud.
The French Ministry of Culture recently announced that it has included the Degas House in the Maisons des Illustres network of houses of the famous in various parts of the world.
According to Vincent Sciama, Consul General of France in Louisiana, "I am very excited that the Degas House has been awarded this prestigious French designation. It recognizes the unique work accomplished by Degas House founder, David Villarrubia, and the impact the Degas House has made on the New Orleans cultural scene since the house was established in 1996."

Villarrubia, who was awarded the Chevalier in the French National Ordre of Arts and Letters by the Ministry of Culture in 2009, responded, "This honor is a tribute to all those who work tirelessly to raise awareness of-and keep alive- the French influence on New Orleans, especially the art of Edgar Degas."

He added, "I am especially proud because of the 236 Maisons des Illustres properties in the network, Degas House is only the second home in the United States to be recognized with this distinction, and only the fourth outside of the French territories."

Besides the homes of visual artists such as Edgar Degas, the Maisons des Illustres network includes the homes of writers, musicians and composers, actors, scientists, designers and world leaders.
The Maison des Illustres designation was created in 2011 by then French Minister of Culture and Communication, Frédéric Mitterand, to honor homes not only for their historical value, but also because of who lived in them. The purpose of the label is to encourage people to visit these homes which represent all aspects of French history and culture.
Degas House is in excellent company, as among the member houses are familiar names such as Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Napoleon, Cartier, Yves Saint Laurent, Marie Curie and Jeanne d' Arc, among many others. Locations of these houses include France, Germany, Tahiti, China, French Guyana, Guadalupe, Corsica, Morocco and the United States.
The Degas House will host a ceremony to unveil the official marker (as shown above) and commemorate its inclusion in the Maisons des Illustres later this year. For more information on the Maisons Des Illustres, please visit http://www.culture.gouv.fr/Aides-demarches/Protections-labels-et-appellations/Label-Maisons-des-illustres.

Edgar Degas in New Orleans

It is well documented in Degas' letters from New Orleans that his time in in the city represents the turning point in Degas' artistic style. Degas' artistic evolution to a "more spontaneous, better art" occurred in New Orleans and led to impressionist Movement of 1874 and beyond. Degas completed eighteen paintings, four drawings and five letters while here in New Orleans.

Degas House

Founded in 1966, the Degas House in New Orleans is the only home or studio of the French Impressionist Master, Edgar Degas, open to the public in the world. The Degas House Museum and Foundation conducts guided tours with Degas' great-grandnieces as tour guides and docents.  Degas House also hosts weddings, receptions and corporate events in the spacious parlors, gallery and courtyard. Degas House welcomes guests into its nine-room historic luxury bed and breakfast.  For more information on Degas House please contact korta@degashouse.com, 504-821-5009, or visit the website https://www.degashouse.com/ orhttps://www.degas.org/.

Elevator Pitch : New Musical House Debut in the Music Box Village

Join us for the debut of Elevator Pitch - the Village's newest musical house! Admission is Free, RSVP for updates!
About this Event
Join us for the opening of "Elevator Pitch"!
A collaboration between renowned artists  New Orleans AirliftChristine Sun Kim, and  Rick Snow, "Elevator Pitch" will join the beloved Music Box Village's campus in New Orleans, as an interactive sound structure that explores how music can be created and experienced by Deaf and hearing communities together. Presented with support from the  Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center.
"Elevator Pitch" is inspired by Kim's childhood memories of crowding elevators with her Deaf friends , and shouting so loudly that they could feel the vibrations of each others' voices. Meanwhile, elevators are often to hearing people as the sites of " awkward silence," thus the concept of this installation challenges when and where various people have a voice. Born deaf herself, Kim approaches "Elevator Pitch" by investigating how Deaf communities of New Orleans experience a city so deeply defined by music, and by highlighting how Deaf people are vital to this culture of sound.
The piece is developed in collaboration with local composer and educator Rick Snow, whose work involves instruments, lighting, media, and sculpture to create immersive experiences; and New Orleans Airlift, the art collective and architectural team behind the Music Box Village. Airlift has stewarded an environment of creative collaboration, with the goal of widening access to sound and music to communities locally, nationally, and globally.
About the artists:
New Orleans Airlift is an acclaimed artist-driven organization that inspires wonder and connects communities through the creation of experimental public artworks. They are widely known for their works of musical architecture, borne out of the region's rich musical landscape.
Christine Sun Kim is a celebrated artist whose multidisciplinary approach includes illustrations, musical notations, and movement that often pays regard to American Sign Language (ASL) to demonstrate various methods of deepening our appreciation of our aural environments.
Rick Snow is a New Orleans-based composer and educator, whose work involves sculptural and interactive sound objects that combine live instruments, interactive video, and lighting with sculptural elements.
Elevator Pitch will officially open on May 21, 2019 and remain as a permanent fixture at the Music Box Village.

Author Event!

Rory O'Neill Schmitt and Rosary Hartel O'Neill Discuss

Their New Book New Orleans Voodoo, A Cultural History

METAIRIE, LA - Rosary Hartel O'Neill and Rory O'Neill Schmitt, authors of a new book titled New Orleans Voodoo, A Cultural History, will discuss it at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

This event is free of charge and is open to the public.

According to the authors, there is no more compelling nor more spiritual city than New Orleans. The city's Roman Catholic roots and its blended French, Spanish, Creole and American Indian populations heavily influenced the rites and rituals that West Africans brought to Louisiana as enslaved laborers. The resulting unique Voodoo tradition is now deeply rooted in the area.

Enslaved practitioners in the 19th century held Voodoo dances in designated public areas like Congo Square but conducted their secret rituals away from the prying eyes of the city. By 1874, about 12,000 New Orleanians attended Voodoo queen Marie Laveau's St. John's Eve rites on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain.

The Voodoo tradition continues in the Crescent City today. Rory Schmitt and Rosary O'Neill study the altars, art, history and ceremonies that anchor Voodoo in New Orleans culture.

Rory O'Neill Schmitt is an author, photographer and professor. Upon graduating from St. Mary's Dominican High School, she moved to New York, where she attended Fordham University and earned her bachelor's degree in art history and studio art, as well as a master's degree in art therapy from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and a  doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction studies with a concentration in art education at Arizona State University in Tempe. O'Neill has gained professional experience over the years at museums and galleries, such as the International Center for Photography, Cristinerose Gallery, Visual Arts Gallery and others. She currently works at the University of Southern California's Bovard College, where she coaches and supports faculty.

Rosary Hartel O'Neill lives in New Orleans and New York City. She is the author of 25 plays and three books of nonfiction. A Senior Fulbright Drama Specialist, she has received six Fulbright Awards. Other awards include residencies at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland, American Academy in Rome and the Irish Cultural Center and Cartoucherie Theatre in Paris. In New York City, she is an active member of the Actors Studio, the Players Club and the National Arts Club. In New Orleans, she is professor emeritus of drama and speech at Loyola University and a member of Louisiana Women in Film and Television. She founded the Southern Repertory Theatre.

Two fun tastings this week
Loiregon! It's a term coined by those who believe that the Loire Valley, not Burgundy, is the true soulmate to the Willamette Valley. And there a quite a few wineries on the bandwagon, including our friends at the Portland based Division Winemaking Company, Leah Jørgensen Cellars and Bow & Arrow to name a few. They have uncovered, or planted, native Loire varieties across the Pacific Northwest, from Washington's Yakima Valley to the Rogue Valley near the California border. That includes melon de Bourgogne (Muscadet's grape), chenin blanc and, especially, cabernet franc, plus sauvignon blanc, malbec (known as côt in the Loire), gamay and pinot noir, which is planted throughout the Loire.

Join Erin and Bridget as we explore this connection in a blind flight - 2 traditional Loire Valley (Sancerre & Gamay) and 2 wines from Oregon's Willamette Valley made with the same varieties. The wines will be presented blind, not as a test to see if you can determine which is which, although that will be fun as well, but to keep any preconceived notions of place out of the mix. What we really want to know is what you think. Is the quality similar? The taste? Do you prefer one bottle over another? And most importantly, do you like them? We'd love for you to participate in this very special event where Oregon takes on one of the most famous wine region in the world! For more information or to reserve a spot go to WNF Loiregon

And for our Friday Free for All this week, join James Moises and Anna Freundl for a tasting of newly arrived Lebanese wines including the fresh vintage of Kefraya Myst, one of our favorite rosés!! Bizou has the largest portfolio of Lebanese wines in the country and this new batch of fresh vintages is super exciting.  This tasting is free and open to the public, no reservations are required. 6-8PM

Also this week the Music in the Park concert series in Fortier Park (the small green space across Esplanade from Swirl) will take place this Sunday, weather permitting.  The concerts are family friendly, community building events that will take place each Sunday from now until Father's day from 1:30 to 3:30.  And to help you bring that perfect bottle of wine or piece of cheese to the event, Swirl will be open this Sunday from 1-5PM.  If you tell Erin you are going to the concert, you'll get a 10% discount on your wine and cheese purchase, plus cups, a plate and knife for your cheese!

The Historic New Orleans Collection will reprise its popular Portage Bike Roll in 2019 and once again bring participants face to face with the culture of New Orleans. A component of the upcoming exhibition  Art of the City: Postmodern to Post-Katrina , presented by The Helis Foundation, the Portage Roll is a bike tour that can be taken with or without a guide and will reach outside of the gallery walls to bring participants face to face with the art, architecture, and history of the city.
Featuring stops at St. Augustine Church in Tremé, The Wave of the World sculpture in City Park, Bayou St. John, and more, the Portage Roll intertwines these landmarks of New Orleans's diverse communities into a single, idiosyncratic urban landscape.
The six-mile tour traces the ancient portage route-an overland path-that once connected the Mississippi River to Bayou St. John and, by extension, Lake Pontchartrain and the Gulf of Mexico. Situated on a natural ridge, this footpath had been used for trade by Native Americans for centuries, and prompted the French to establish New Orleans in 1718 where the French Quarter is today. Esplanade Avenue, running from the river to Bayou St. John, traverses part of this ridge and is the primary thoroughfare of the Portage Roll.
Artist Babette Beaullieu set the route, which was inspired by a similar program conceived by the late architect R. Allen Eskew. Jacob Rozensweig, a local cartographer, designed a map of the tour, allowing for a self-guided experience.
Guided bike tours will be held on Saturdays and Sundays, May 11-June 2, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and are free, thanks to the generous support of The Helis Foundation. Bicycles will be provided by Blue Bikes. Reservations are required and may be made through  my.hnoc.org . Participants must be 16+ years old.
Art of the City will open on April 6, 2019, as the inaugural exhibition in THNOC's new, exhibition center at 520 Royal Street. Programming related to the exhibition will continue throughout the run of the show, and Portage Roll maps will be available in the exhibition.
Note: The guided tour travels more than six miles
 and requires strenuous physical exertion.

Figure drawing is one of the oldest and most valuable artistic traditions. In this course, you will be working with a nude model, which is an invaluable asset to aspiring and established artists alike. Drawing a model from observation develops and broadens one's perceptual drawing skills. Through this experience students will further their understanding of the proportional relationships and rhythms of the body and natural form

Two of New Orleans most talented and unstoppable performers have teamed up as a dynamic duo to present Marquee - an ode to the trail blazers of the New Orleans cabaret. Brought to you by Vinsantos, LadyBEAST, and Le Petit Theatre - this heartwarming show gives a window into the history of New Orleans cabaret from the 1890s through the 1950s. A dynamic cast of characters from drag, burlesque, vaudeville and circus pay homage to the colorful history of this well known, but less understood cultural staple of American theatre.

This playful performance lends tribute to the pioneers of New Orleans cabaret such as Nita and Zita, Barbette, and Josephine Baker. Ensemble acts of bawdy burlesque, death defying circus, vaudeville dance comedy, live music and more are tactfully performed by modern stars of the New Orleans cabaret scene including Franky Canga, TitiBaby, Sweet Tooth Simone, Cherry Bombshell, Madame Mystere, Vinsantos and LadyBEAST. Original music by Vinsantos and choreography by LadyBEAST.

There will be a mini museum on display in the lobby of the theatre of historical artifacts for the audience to experience prior to seeing the show.

Co-producer and Director of Movement and Choreography and performer, LadyBEAST, has a variety of incredible talents including producing and touring, nationally and locally, the production "Levity". Vinsantos, the other co-producer, composer of original music and performer, will demonstrate her extraordinary skills that caught her the name "Queen of New Orleans Queens" as said by Vice Magazine. Joining these two will be performers Titibaby, Franky Canga, Sweet Tooth Simone, Cherry Bombshell and Madame Mystere.
"This is a full-blown theatre production which includes the best of New Orleans' performers," said LadyBEAST.
Tickets are $25 to $35 and can be purchased here. VIP experience: $45- available through Le Petit Theatre's box office by calling (504) 522-2081.

There will be a mini-museum of historical artifacts on display in the lobby of the theatre prior to the show. Additional performances are scheduled for ;
