Halifax Bus Station

Jointly delivered with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, the project will deliver a new £20.5m bus station in Halifax town centre, which will significantly improve safety, comfort, connectivity and accessibility for bus station users and local people.

PLANS

The project aims to deliver a modern, fit for purpose facility that complements the surrounding heritage, public realm and urban fabric of Halifax town centre. The project includes:

  • Building a transformational new station building providing better quality facilities for passengers.
  • The facility will provide and improved customer access point and information, better quality cycle parking, a single passenger concourse, real-time bus and rail information, and larger retail opportunities.
  • This project will contribute to the Leeds City Region’s objective to be carbon neutral by 2038 by; reducing energy use and waste by using environmentally friendly materials, generating renewable energy with solar panels, and introducing ducting for electric buses and cycles.
  • Project proposals include a fully enclosed passenger concourse, with CCTV coverage. Bus and pedestrian movements will be segregated by automatic doors to bus stands and main entrances and fences to encourage the use of safe walking routes.
  • The new bus station will include two additional bus stands and three additional bus layover bays.
  • Improved walking routes to key destinations across the town centre, such as Trinity Sixth Form Centre, Dean Clough, Woolshops and Piece Hall.
  • A new single fully enclosed passenger concourse, with easy interchange between bus services, a safe and secure waiting environment, and level walking routes for all users.
  • Increased retail and commercial provision to help to improve the passenger experience.
  • Provision of improved real-time information, including rail services, to better integrate these modes of travel.

 

BENEFITS

Economic growth: The redevelopment of Halifax Bus Station will contribute to the growth of the local economy by connecting people to jobs and training and improving transport connectivity.

Sustainability: Introducing an ‘electric bus station’ that will allow the introduction of electric buses; the proposals will enable more people to travel sustainably, supporting targets for increased bus use in the Leeds City Region.

Safety and security: Separation of bus and passenger movements to will improve safety.

Accessibility: The project will provide a central level concourse, level bus boarding throughout and an additional step-free entrance.

Interchange: An improved bus station with more retail opportunities and improved travel information. Better town centre connectivity through improved walking routes.

 

PROGRESS

February 2024

From Sunday 18 February there will be changes to bus services at Halifax Bus Station. Passengers can find the latest travel information on the Metro website, or by calling MetroLine: 0113 245 7676. 

November 2023

Work is continuing on the new Halifax Bus Station, see the latest action from on site including the demolition of the temporary bus station in the video below. 

The award winning bus station is partially open to passengers using some bus services and is due to fully re-open in early 2024.

Outside the new Halifax Bus Station

From Sunday 1 October the new Halifax Bus Station will partially re-open to passengers using some bus services. Passengers can find the latest travel information through the Metro website, or by calling MetroLine: 0113 245 7676. 

From this date, people will also be able to access toilet facilities (including a new Changing Places toilet) and visit the new travel centre. 

Construction work will continue with the new bus station due to fully re-open in early 2024. You can find out more information about this project on the West Yorkshire Combined Authority website

November 2022

Work is progressing quickly on this £17.7m project funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. In November, work began on the installation of the new "green roof" which has been covered with bee-friendly plants, just one of the environmentally friendly features of this build. February 2022

From Sunday 27 February, the bus station entrance, travel centre and bus stands are being relocated to the other side of the site, near the Sunday School Façade (across from Sainsbury’s) on Winding Road. Some services will also move to town centre bus stops from that date. More information about the revised services is available from West Yorkshire Metro Bus Station Works

September 2021

The bus station will be partially closed from Sunday 5 September until summer 2023 to allow construction of the new facility. Bus services will be affected during this time so passengers are being asked to visit the Metro website or call 0113 245 7676 for travel information. September 2020

Planning approval was granted at the end of September 2020.

August 2020

The Full Business Case (FBC) approved by West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Investment Committee in August 2020.

July 2020

A Planning Application was submitted to Calderdale Council in July 2020.

June 2020

Following a period of public engagement in early 2020, a Full Business Case (FBC) was submitted in June 2020.

October 2019

The Outline Business Case (OBC) for the project was approved by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority in October 2019.
