BBC Young Reporter Competition 2024

The BBC Young Reporter Competition 2024 is now closed.

What is the BBC Young Reporter Competition?

It is an annual opportunity for anyone aged 11-18 in the UK to submit an original story idea to the BBC.

BBC Young Reporter Competition winners have the unique chance to tell their story on TV, radio, online or on social media with the help of BBC journalists, producers and programme makers.

We ask young people for original and true stories about their lives and the world they live in and to explain their personal connection to the story and why they want to tell it to a wider audience.

Previous BBC Young Reporter Competition winners

Following regional and national judging, 20 winning stories were selected, produced and broadcast across the BBC in 2023, including on The One Show, BBC Breakfast, BBC 5 Live, BBC News and BBC Local Radio programmes, as well as online and on social media platforms.

You can see the 2023 winning stories here.

Previous winners’ stories are here and here.

Judging criteria and who are the judges?

Stories are judged on editorial merit – that means the strength of story, its originality, and the personal connection or background behind it.

All story ideas are checked prior to final judging to make sure they are factually true, accurate and legally sound.

Judges select national and regional winners.

They include editors from across the BBC as well as presenters and reporters, including from BBC News Naga Munchetty and Ashley John-Baptiste, The One Show’s Alex Jones, along with Pria Rai from Newsbeat and Newsround’s Ricky Boleto.
