Robert O’Connor will release his brand new single “Everything You Wanted” on May 17.
The self-written track, produced by Gareth Shortland (Sophie Ellis Bextor, Steps), is about hitting that sweet spot in life where you’ve got “the money, the fame, the body, the face, a lover’s embrace”, as he sings in the chorus of the 80s-tinged synth-pop track.
“It’s about having it all, and getting it through good old-fashioned hard work”, says the Dublin-born-and-raised artist, adding: “These days, everyone’s an influencer, everything’s rented or gifted, so when someone is a grafter, and has quietly built an impressive life for themselves without shouting it from the rooftops, that’s infinitely more impressive to me”.
The story behind the song, Robert says, is an unusual one: “I fell asleep at 12am listening to German ‘80s electro-pop, which I couldn’t understand a word of, and I woke at 5am with a fully formed lyric and melody, in English, sang it into my phone, turned over and went back asleep”.
The track, which Robert describes as being sonically “somewhere between Hall & Oates and Simple Minds”, acts as the third teaser from his forthcoming album, which he recently described as a “pop pic’n’mix”, joking that the record will include “everything they [his listeners] want, and everything they need”.
The as-yet-untitled album, due later this year, will follow his acclaimed EP ‘Severance’, which landed the singer over 150,000 Spotify streams, receiving rave reviews from publications like Retro Pop who said the record “showcased Robert's superb songwriting and saw him finally find his sound”.
“Everything You Wanted” follows Robert’s recent single “Mysterious Times”, which became his twelfth consecutive Top 5 hit on the LGBTQ Music Chart, with the music video becoming his most-watched to date, scoring over 30,000 views on YouTube.
