“Readers will delight in the breathtaking illustrations. Double-page spreads are rich and vibrant, Tsong using the colors of nature to evoke a warm and inviting environment. The combination of printmaking and digital collage creates an abundance of depth and texture to each illustration. From an aerial view of a tiny tent in a vast forest to a close-up look at a dazzling spiderweb, the varying perspective reveals more and more with each page turn.” Kirkus Reviews

Publishers Weekly writes, “ In jubilant scenes, Tsong’s digital illustrations layer thickly outlined, rough-hewn figures with largely fanciful skin tones atop vibrant batik-like patterns. When three kids swing gaily on a tire swing (“First taking flight”), they practically fly off the page. Similarly unadorned and emphatic, text and prose aptly focus attention on many affecting moments of early childhood. “

Fake Chinese Sounds, graphic novel
Fake Chinese Sounds—a starred review from Kirkus, “Earnest, engaging, and relatable.”
What began as a sketch of a graphic panel 12 years ago, evolved into a middle grade graphic novel just under 200 pages. I hope you’ll love meeting Mei Ying, the 5th grade protaganist as she meets her Nai Nai for the first time, encounters racist bullying and becomes more aware of how complex everyone’s lives are.
