Why this petition matters

The Royal Borough of Greenwich is campaigning to stop the government from scrapping vital funding used to support people with the cost of living crisis.

We've spoken to over 1,600 people who told us how lifesaving the Household Support Fund has been, with 2,000 more sharing their increasing concerns around the cost of living crisis - and we know they aren't alone. It is clear to everyone that the crisis is not over, so why should the support be?

From April, the government is set to end the Household Support Fund. By not extending the grant, the end of this vital funding is now looming over 24,000 vulnerable residents in the Royal Borough of Greenwich who will have vital cash support stripped away from 1 April, effectively making them poorer overnight.

We are asking central government to show compassion and act swiftly, allowing us to continue supporting residents who are being forced to choose between eating or heating. You are invited to sign our petition calling to save this cost of living support from being axed.

We have seen a drastic rise in people reaching out for help, in 2022 Greenwich Foodbank revealed it had given out more than 100,000 meals before October, surpassing the 92,000 given in the entirety of 2021. Between October 2023 and January 2024, we had 2,300 people reach out for support for the first time, compared to just over 1,200 between October 2021 to January 2022. Alongside this, council funded Live Well Greenwich have given more than £50,000 in direct energy debt relief.

As we continue to support residents who need us most through our cost of living scheme, Greenwich Supports, we're campaigning for fair funding that meets the needs of our communities.
