Women and girls should be safe and feel safe. If they don’t, they can’t have the same chances in life as men and boys.

Sexual harassment takes place in the many spaces girls live their lives: at school, in the workplace, online and in public. ‘Public places’ include any premises, highway or other place to which the public has access; it could be indoors or outdoors and either publicly or privately owned.

Across the country, women and girls are facing verbal and physical harassment every day on the street - and we want it to stop.

IT CAN STOP. IF WE CHANGE TOGETHER. SAFER STREETS FOR WOMEN & GIRLS

SAFER STREETS

Safer Streets – Violence against women and girls (North Somerset and Somerset County Council).

To provide reassurance to women and girls and ensure the safety of public spaces, the Government announced an additional £25 million for the Safer Streets Fund.

Following the joint bid put forward by North Somerset and Somerset County Council, the funding was awarded to the neighbouring councils to help tackle violence against women and girls.

We are all in this together. We can make the change.

We need to change behaviour by highlighting language and mannerisms used to normalise sexual harassment to make our streets safer and help prevent sexual violence.

You don’t need to have previously objected to someone’s behaviour for it to be considered unwanted.

THE VISION

Education is key, prevention by helping both men and women recognise the seriousness and impact of sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is unwanted behaviour of a sexual nature which:- violates your dignity/makes you feel intimidated, degraded or humiliated/creates a hostile or offensive environment.

EMPOWER WOMEN TO REPORT CONCERNS

Many women don’t report concerns to the police as they are worried that they won’t be taken seriously. If you have been a victim of crime, you will be listened to, you will be respected, you will be believed.’
