The Tainui Group Holdings brand is grounded in the significance of the hoe (paddle) to Waikato-Tainui.
Hoe steered the great Tainui waka on its journey to Aotearoa in the 14th century. It was used by Hoturoa who speared the hoe into the whenua, connecting the people to the land. It is symbolic of the courage of our tuupuna in forging new pathways and a new future, the adventurous spirit of our iwi and the determination to navigate our own future.
Our Story
Our new building for ACC will feature a stunning graphic illustration on its exterior glass panels.
It’s the work of Renata Te Wiata which draws on the way the whenua was used in pre-colonial times, and on the nearby Waikato awa. Like most of Waikato, Kirikiriroa is known for its highly fertile soils and was an area of vast cultivations pre-colonisation. The ACC building sits on former maara kai (vegetable gardens) which fed and provided sustenance for mana whenua and, later, newly arrived settlers.
The name of this hotel, Te Arikinui, has been gifted by Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII.
Te Arikinui is a Maaori title meaning Supreme Paramount Chief. It was the chiefly title carried by Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, who was the sixth monarch to reign as Head of the Kiingitanga (King Movement) in Aotearoa New Zealand. ‘Te Arikinui’ was chosen by Kiingi Tuheitia to reflect the status and 5-star premium experience that this hotel offers.
At 490 hectares Ruakura Superhub is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest multi-use developments, equivalent to the size of Auckland’s CBD.
