ISTANBUL, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- A gladiator relief and a column tambour dating back to about 2,000 years ago were seized during an operation in Turkey's northwestern province of Canakkale, local media reported on Tuesday.
The Canakkale anti-smuggling units caught the ancient artifacts at an address in the Kumkale village, the Hurriyet daily said.
The artifacts revealed evidence about gladiatorial games taking place in the ancient city of Troy, Hurriyet noted, citing Troy Museum experts.
The experts believe that the two pieces belonged to a Roman-era gladiator school in Troy, the daily said, noting that at least two people were detained in the operation.
The ancient city's ruins are located at Hisarlik archaeological site in Canakkale, and historical artifacts belonging to the city are on display in Troy Museum. Enditem
