Please note that this public consultation has now closed.

Thank you to all those who took part in the 'North Halifax Improved Streets for people' consultation. All survey answers, comments and suggestions are being considered in the next phase of designs, which will be subject to further public consultation.

Please find the Outcome Report, which summarises the results of the consultation and key themes in feedback received, available at the top of this webpage or by clicking the button below.

The information below was presented during the public consultation between Monday 15 March to Sunday 25 April 2021.

Calderdale Council, in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, is working to improve walking and cycling journeys in North Halifax and we want to hear your views about our plans.

This project aims to make walking and cycling easier and safer and improve access between North Halifax and Halifax town centre. Improving facilities for cycling and walking will help people get to places more easily in North Halifax, including shops, workplaces, health centres and schools. Improved walkways, crossing places and changes to the street to reduce traffic speeds (traffic calming) also aim to encourage people to walk more.

The project is part of the Leeds City Region Transforming Cities Fund (TCF), a major new programme of investment that aims to create a step change in travel across the West Yorkshire region, and this area has been chosen as one where we could bring the most benefits to walking and cycling facilities.

This is an early consultation to get your views on our current ideas. Your views will be used to help us develop more detailed plans, and there will be another consultation on those detailed plans later in 2021.

What has been done so far

To help us understand why people don’t choose to walk or cycle, in September 2020 Calderdale Council asked people in North Halifax to fill in a ‘Streets for People’ engagement survey. It asked how people felt about getting around the streets in their area, and hundreds of people took part. The project team at Calderdale Council have also spoken with local Councillors and had a group discussion with people in North Halifax who suggested improvements to streets that would help people to walk and cycle more.

Our ideas include:

  • A new cycleway from North Halifax to Halifax town centre
  • Improved pavements and crossing points for walking and cycling
  • A section of Lee Bridge that only buses and people who are walking and cycling are allowed to go through. Drivers of all vehicles can still use the street to get to buildings and car parks, but drivers would not be allowed to drive all the way along Dean Clough and Lee Bridge
  • Making streets better for walking and cycling
  • Improving green spaces
  • “Modal filters” that stop people from driving along a street if they could go a different way on a main road

The proposals are presented in six ‘Zone’ locations which are shown on the map below. On this webpage you will find information including plans and pictures to help you understand the proposals. We have also provided answers to some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) which you can find on this webpage. The Zones we are consulting on are:

Zone 1: Illingworth

Zone 2: Cousin Lane and Moor Lane, Ovenden

Zone 3: Shay Lane, Ovenden

Zone 4: Ovenden Way

Zone 5: Ovenden Road, Shroggs Road, Lee Bridge and Lee Mount

Zone 6: Dean Clough and Lee Bridge
