Following the devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, China’s economy bounced back from the contractions of early 2020 to register record growth of 18.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2021. These encouraging signs  triggered memories of 2008, when China emerged as a crucial engine for economic growth following the global financial crisis. However, in today’s vastly different geopolitical and economic environment, China’s willingness – or ability – to play a similar role in driving the global economic recovery is uncertain.

To discuss China’s economic recovery and its role in the post-COVID world economy, Asia House will welcome Dr Wang Huiyao, Founder and President of the Center for China and Globalization, for a briefing with Corporate Members on Tuesday 22 June.

Dr Wang will provide an update on China’s economic outlook and reflect on its potential role in reforming the global trading system, including the WTO, in the post-COVID era. In light of deteriorating political relations between China and many developed western economies, Dr Wang will also discuss opportunities for deepened cooperation between China and partners in Europe and North America on issues of mutual importance, including climate change and global health. As countries around the world plot their economic recoveries from the disruption of COVID-19, this briefing will assess the importance of China to these plans, and to the future of globalisation more broadly.
