Live in-person & online event
Friday 19 & Saturday 20 November 2021

Join us by the Indian Ocean for a conference themed “Another Word, Another World”.

This will be a hybrid event, with speakers and attendees having the option of attending in-person or participating virtually.

Recently, we have seen first-hand the creation of a new world through the pandemic, with the innovation in language it has brought. Newly coined terms have emerged, and T&I practitioners have helped with transitioning into this new reality.

As translators and interpreters, it is our job to connect different worlds and help people move between them. Through our professional practice, we may open up another world for our clients, but sometimes we also open up a can of worms.

How does switching between languages change our interpretation of the world? How can we, as T&I professionals, best facilitate understanding and ease the shift in meaning? What are the best business practices that help us work efficiently, work competently and keep well?

Please note that as the conference is taking place in Perth, all times listed on the program and here below are in Australian Western Standard Time (AWST).

Due to current restrictions and continued uncertainties surrounding the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 AUSIT National Conference, which was due to be held in Perth, has now been moved online.

The focus of this year’s conference is on the challenges and opportunities opening up in an evolving T&I landscape, specifically during this time of insecurity and rapid change experienced by the profession over recent months.

Sub-themes include: business during a pandemic; new skills and professional requirements in interpreting and translating; adaptive business practices; remuneration and working conditions; remote interpreting; translation technologies; and remote T&I education and training.

Keynote speakers

Stephen Doherty leads the HAL Language Processing Research Lab at UNSW, where he is an associate professor in linguistics, interpreting and translation. He will present on the topic “Language technology today and tomorrow: Challenges and opportunities for current and future language service professionals”.

Karolina Karczmarek-Giel is an industry professional with over 15 years of experience. Drawing from her broad background in translation, digital marketing, positive psychology, and meta-learning, she will explore strategies for dealing with the current crisis from various disciplines.
