Job summary

A full-time post has become available within the Toxicology Department, to work on the EU Horizon 2020 project GOLIATH: "Beating Goliath: Generation of novel, integrated and internationally harmonized approaches for testing metabolism disrupting compounds", which focusses on developing in vitro test methods that will contribute to the assessment of the role of Metabolic Disrupting Chemicals (MDCs) in obesity and metabolic disorders including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease metabolic disorders.

UKHSA are involved in all the work packages, but are leading on (pre-) validation of the in vitro tests, detailed reviews, and the development of an Integrated Approach to the Testing and Assessment (IATA) of MDCs, ultimately intended to enter the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Test Guideline Programme.

We are looking for candidates with a relevant PhD, or equivalent qualification or experience relevant to toxicology and chemical risk assessment and particularly data analysis, ideally in the endocrine disruptor field.

The candidate is expected to contribute to the support of the other partners by keeping a good track of data streams, assess and review data quality, weight of evidence and uncertainties, data analyses and integration into AOP/mechanistic and IATA frameworks and contribute to writing reports and scientific articles, finalising the project outputs.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will support

  1. the organization, synthesis and critical analysis of the information being generated in the work packages and as part of established external collaborations, developing and characterising mechanisms and modes of action of metabolic disrupting chemicals;
  2. developing the strategy for using these newly developed, and existing assays, with the formulation of an IATA;
  3. coordinating and negotiating input into an OECD detailed review paper on metabolic disruption; and providing back-up with the management of the (pre-)validation activities.

The work on this project will be based at RCE, with travel to partner sites/ meetings in Europe twice a year, and potentially participation in relevant OECD meetings, generally in Paris, France.
