Mirjam Vosmeer

Mirjam Vosmeer is a senior researcher at the Lectorate of Civic Interaction Design. She holds a PhD on the topic of Videogames and Gender and developed a series of research- and educational projects into design and storytelling for virtual reality.

Mirjam received her Master’s degree in the field of psychology of culture and religion, with a thesis that focused on narrative psychology. In the following years, she worked as a journalist, publishing articles on literature and virtual worlds for magazines such as De Groene Amsterdammer and Elle. She worked as a scriptwriter and editor for a series of short films for VPRO television and wrote numerous scripts for Dutch soap operas such as Goede Tijden Slechte Tijden.

In 2010, she presented her PhD thesis Videogames & Gender at the University of Amsterdam, focusing on the medium videogames from a cultural studies and women studies perspective. At the UvA she also taught courses on video games, social media and virtual worlds. In 2013, she started her first virtual reality research project Interactive Cinema at the HvA. Since then, she has presented workshops, keynotes and presentations on storytelling for VR at conferences all over the world. Her work on VR focuses on interaction, user experience and narrative design. For her research project Storytelling for 360° Media she received a RAAK MKB grant. In October 2020 she received a second RAAK MKB grant for her research project VR for Diversity.

At the educational department of Communication and Multimedia Design she supervises bachelor graduation projects and she is a team-member of the Minor Applied Game Design and one of the developers of the Minor Immersive Environments. She is currently also involved as a PhD supervisor for VR projects at the Norwegian Film School.
