"ARToberfest" (formerly known as Octoberfest) themed event to be located in the Atrium Gallery. Thank you to Karen Macek for suggesting this perfect tie-in name!
Please copy this Newsletter and refer to it as you make your plans to exhibit in this exciting show. I will send additional information as the show plans progress.

LAA PLANTATION GALLERY NEWS
September intake and pick-up at our Plantation Gallery will take place on Wednesday, September 5th between 9AM and 11AM.
PICK-UP IS IMPORTANT! Each month, there are an increasingly large number of artists who do not pick up their artwork or make arrangements for another person to pick it up. We then need to interrupt the hanging of new pieces to call people and remind them. Additionally, if your piece is not picked up, we are taking up space in an area that many others need access to, and we cannot guarantee the safety of your artwork. PLEASE be courteous of others and make arrangements to pick up your artwork each month.

Each month, all members who hang one piece of their work on the Member Wall at our Plantation Gallery will be automatically entered into a drawing to win a terrific prize. The winner will be announced in the following month's LAA Newsletter and prizes will be awarded at intake the following month. Winners should report to the Plantation intake desk to pick up their prize.

For the month of September, the Plantation Gallery Display Case will feature the works of Artist of the Month Cyndi Pollack. We are also presenting a special opportunity this month, making the Artist of the Month Wall available to all LAA member artists.
Cyndi Pollack is an artist and interior designer who moved to The Landings in 2008. She began making jewelry fourteen years ago, taking classes in beading and wire wrapping. Then six years ago, she discovered polymer clay and fell in love with the medium. "I took a few classes in polymer clay and got hooked! It's like being a kid again," she says. "Polymer clay is a medium that you can do so much with. You can texture your pieces with laces, bark or anything that has an interesting pattern. You can make all kinds of shapes, and the clay accepts different surface treatments from oil and acrylic paints to powders.''
She now combines her passions for polymer clay and beading into unique works of wearable art. She also incorporates the clay into her mixed media canvases and vessels. Cyndi describes her style as organic and a little Boho chic. She leans toward colorful pieces, using nature as her inspiration.
Cyndi's necklaces, earrings and bracelets are made of clay which the artist has sculpted, colors, beaded and baked. The results are award-winning pieces made with Swarovski crystals and seed beads; a sculpted necklace bedecked with beads and flowers; a bird in flight. She also creates custom pieces for her clients, and sells her art at local craft fairs and art shows.

Ah--- if our membership audience gets a wee bit too comfortable, LAA brass shakes the confetti gun and shoots it out. For the opening General Meeting of the 2018-19 year, the spew resembles a a dynamic free-for-all, an informal and engaging night where we'll shine the light on two of our most masterfully versatile artists, Karen Macek and Lydia Bishop. Both ladies will generously will share some of their hard-earned and hard-learned experience using two ancient methods of painting, both where wax is incorporated into the work, but in vastly differing techniques. One hot, one cold. It's all about that wax.
Karen Macek, an artist/designer who works in oil, acrylic and computer graphics, is now retired from a 30-year career in the garment industry. She says she is busier than ever enjoying her frequent travels, and with her multi-faceted creative talents, the vivid textures and colors of the outdoors always find a way into her art with bold, expressive knife and brush strokes. Karen originated "Color x Twelve", where artists exhibit and maintain paintings in the Ladies' Comfort Stations on all Landings Golf courses, all while Chairing two of our recent and prestigious Spring Art Shows. Karen's glimmering landscapes may be viewed on her website, karenmacekart.com. For this special evening, Karen will demonstrate painting a landscape with a palette knife, blending cold wax medium into the oil paint. For painters, this is an interesting take on a technique sure to entice you out of your comfort zone.
Lydia Bishop is well-known throughout the LAA and the Savannah area for her paintings and ribbon-winning encaustics (defined as the melting and blending of layers of wax, with mechanically applied heat into a unified piece of work). She shows her art in City Market's Signature Gallery and sells her encaustics almost as fast as she finishes them. This wide clientele understands and appreciates the 20-30 layers of wax, fused at 180 degrees with a gun or torch, required to complete the work. A consummate artist, Lydia's process begins with a concept that gains momentum in successive stages, her imagination reeling as it ventures further into uncharted territory. Frequently, she says, the finished encaustic is totally different from her original idea, which is what she likes best. For the evening of September 19, Lydia will demonstrate her process of creating a magnificent encaustic painting.
Artists and art lovers, this will be a night to let loose, bring a friend or don't, find a seat or don't, nibble munchies or sip wine. Fire away with questions! They can handle it! We welcome you in joining the LAA at the Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, September 11 at 6:30.

ART PANTRY DONATIONS NEEDED...
In an ongoing effort to assist Savannah Public School teachers to provide the best possible art instruction they can give over and above what they are allotted $$ wise each year by the school district, we are continuing to collect art supplies at our monthly general meetings or drop off at Betsy Slocum's house (2 Palm Glade Ct., Deer Creek).
All supplies are given to teachers upon a written request.
Items such as watercolor paints, acrylic paints, brushes, watercolor paper, sketch pads, frames, crayons, colored pencils etc. are in high demand as they are costly and run out quickly when stretched among many children. They can be gently used or brand new - as little or as much as you'd like to donate!

We received over 60 fabulous entries and are in the process of having them judged by 20 non-artist note card users.
We will announce the winners at our season opening General Membership Meeting on Tuesday, September 11 and will have packages available for sale by cash or check soon!
They make great hostess gifts, stocking stuffers, or just to write a quick note of thanks or a holiday greeting!
The cost is $20 per pack of ten (includes envelopes).
Remember, proceeds benefit our arts in education programs!
