Education in Brazil and the UK has lagged behind in language and quantitative skills development. Without these skills, one cannot function in modern international society where communication is key, and arguments rely on quantitative analyses of big data. This timely workshop addresses these issues by applying corpus linguistics (CL) to education. Its aim is to enhance early-career researchers’ (ECRs’) capacity in quantitative/language skills by means of corpus linguistics (CL).
Researcher Links Workshops bring together ECRs from the UK and partner countries to make international connections that can improve the quality of their research collaboratively. The bilateral nature of the workshop will sensitize ECRs to the needs of diverse populations in Brazil and the UK.
This workshop will involve 10 ECRs based in Brazil and 10 ECRs based in the UK. It is expected that the ECRs are from the Humanities and/or Social Sciences and will be knowledgeable in Corpus Linguistics. Following the Newton guidelines, ECRs are those whose PhDs have been awarded a maximum of 10 years prior to the workshop. Exceptions will be made for those who have had career breaks (e.g. maternity leave). ECRs from less wealthy or more remote universities are encouraged to apply. A democratic selection practice will be adopted: participants will be chosen irrespective of age, gender, ethnicity, religious belief, sexual orientation or disability.
Workshop registration will close on 28 November 2021 (Sunday), and applicants will be notified of the outcome of their submissions by 30 November 2021 (Tuesday).
The workshop will be held entirely online, and participants need to ensure that they have the technical means to access the synchronous sessions and asynchronous activities. However, participants are not expected to have any software licenses. These will be provided as needed free of charge.
