Workshop on OSINT - registration - FULL

Workshop is full. We are no longer accepting participants

SOS Malta is pleased to invite journalists to a series of workshops on Open Source Intelligence. The training will take place on 5th, 6th and 8th June, 2023 from 5:30-8:30pm and will be given by Jan Gunnar Furuly, Norwegian investigative journalist and OSINT researcher.

Journalists will learn techniques to analyse videos and images from anywhere on the globe, and to get to know the originality of the content: who made it, where was it recorded or photographed, when and why?

Over three evenings, they will explore a lot of online tools that will help them gain mastery as OSINT/GEOVERIFICATION researchers at their media house. More specifically, they will learn:

  • how to verify which street address a video or an image was shot from.
  • Using anything from weather data, information on fires worldwide and shadow calculations, they will also learn to assess when the material was shot.
  • How to gauge if content has been published before in quite another context.
  • How to use facial recognition engines and reverse image searches to find the ID of people from videos or photos

OSINT = Open Source Intelligence.

We have a limit of 20 participants so we ask each newsroom/journalist who would like to join, to commit their participation. Newsrooms, if the journalists who sign up cannot attend on the day, please be ready to send others in substitute.

The venue is to be confirmed. The workshops will be face-to-face and journalists are expected to bring their laptop with them and install the desktop version of Google Earth Pro: https://www.google.com/earth/about/versions/.  They will also have to install some kind of software to work with images – for instance Photoshop.
