Learning in an Open World (LIOW) Strategy
The Institute of Educational Technology's research programme Learning in an Open World (LIOW) is undergoing a strategic refresh, and anyone with an interest in open education is invited to share their input.

Use this form to share your contact details and ideas for refreshing the activities and strategic focus of the LIOW portfolio (https://iet.open.ac.uk/research/programmes/learning-in-an-open-world).

The LIOW programme has been highly influential, with contributions to high profile international projects including:

  • OER Hub (2012-2016)
  • Global OER Graduate Network (2016-present)
  • European Network for Catalysing Open Resources in Education (ENCORE+) (2021-2023)
  • Models for Online, Open, Flexible and Technology enhanced higher education (OOFAT) (2018-2019)
  • European MOOC Consortium: Labour Markets (2019-2021)
  • UK Open Textbooks (2018-2019)
  • OER World Map

LIOW has successfully developed significant research impact through openness.  Our work formed the basis for a REF2021 impact case study, which can be accessed at:

The work of the LIOW team has also been recognised by several awards in recent years, including:

  • UNESCO OER Implementation Award (2021)
  • Open Education Global Award for Open Research Excellence (GO-GN) (2020)
  • Open Education Consortium Award for Innovation (OER World Map) (2018)
  • Open Education Consortium Award for Research Excellence (GO-GN) (2018)
  • Research Councils UK Engaging Research Award (OER Hub) (2015)
  • ACE Award for Research Excellence (OER Hub) (2014)
We are keen to connect with open education advocates, OER and OEP enthusiasts, and those who a focus on open values and how they can be applied to our work.  We'd like to foster stronger connections with those interested in these areas.
