Smart Meter Profile Generator Tool - Registration of Interest for Researcher Alpha Testers
Centre for Net Zero is an autonomous research unit founded by the Octopus Energy Group. We have previously worked with researchers who are looking to understand the future energy system, and are committed to helping advance the global knowledge base in this space by bringing tools that researchers, grids and policymakers can use to accelerate a faster, fairer and affordable transition.
We believe researchers would benefit from high quality smart meter data from customers with different low carbon technologies (LCTs) such as electric vehicles (EVs), heat pumps (HPs) as well as solar panels and batteries. It would be also helpful to be able to simulate customer behaviour both spatially (e.g over different types of customers and homes) and temporally (e.g. over different seasons), and in response to different tariffs in the market. This electricity consumption model could then be fed into other downstream models and be used to help advance research in this space.
Household smart meter data is a type of personal data, and thus protected by GDPR. We are working on an early stage project which will model the typical profiles of customers with these types of technologies enabling end users to specify a set of inputs of these residential consumer "archetypes" and generate realistic consumption profiles. The model is trained on real-world Octopus Energy customer data, but is not specific to any particular customer.
As part of this process, we are seeking Alpha Testers who can help us shape the API and web app for this tool, whose first release is expected in July - August 2022. Our intention is that the project will then move to a closed invitation-only beta stage as we test its scalability and will eventually be available for general use for researchers interested in understanding the energy transition, policymakers, and other selected users. There will be no fee for Alpha Testers and we hope to make the general release free of charge for those in recognised academic institutions.
The ideal Alpha Tester for this project is someone who:
* Works for an academic research institution, or research group, focused on the energy transition
* Has worked with smart meter data, or time series consumption data, previously
* Has interesting research question(s) that use this data directly, or use it to feed into downstream models.
* Is willing and able to work closely with Centre for Net Zero to help shape the tool and product for other researchers
