2,500 km Cycle for Motor Neurone Disease

Donation protected
On 9th June I'll be setting off on a 2,500 km cycling challenge along Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way, raising funds for motor neurone disease (MND).

(This page is set up for donations in euros, though donations can be made from any account in any country).

Most of you know that I'm a bit of an ultra-endurance cycling nut, but this will without doubt be the toughest thing I've ever done, by a long way!

This is an organised, competitive event, starting in Derry and following the north-west-south coast to Cork. But it's solo, unsupported and the clock doesn't stop till I reach the finish, so I'll be carrying all my kit and finding my own food and (very) brief shelter along the way. I'm setting myself a target of 7 days to complete the 2,500 km and almost 30,000 m of climbing. This means approx. 360 km a day with time for only about 3 hours sleep a night. It's going to be brutal: exhaustion, sleep deprivation, rough coastal roads and everything the Atlantic throws at me - likely lots of wind and rain!

But this hardship will only be temporary.
"It never always gets worse" is a popular ultra-endurance mantra to help get through the really challenging moments. Yes, it's tough, but it can't keep getting worse!
Sadly, this isn't the case for MND sufferers.

My good friend, Paul, was diagnosed with MND last year at the age of 46.
Paul and his family have responded to this horrible news with incredible energy and positivity. They've set up All Paul Together - https://www.allpaultogether.com/ - to fund research to improve quality of life for MND sufferers around the world, and to cover some of Paul's medical costs.

MND is a progressive neurological condition that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This leads to muscle weakness, wasting and eventual loss of the ability to walk, eat, drink and breathe. The cause of MND is not known and currently there is no cure. For half of MND sufferers, life expectancy is less than 3 years.

With your support, we aim to improve quality of life for MND sufferers so that they too can tell themselves "it never always gets worse".

Your support is hugely appreciated - thank you.
