YOUTH CIRCUS in Europe has evolved al lot the last 30 years. Pioneer organizations have built up expertise and are connected through a strong European youth circus network: EYCO.
In the meantime many new youth circus organizations with younger entrepreneurs and youth circus trainers emerged, bringing new approaches, new drives and fresh energy…
At previous youth circus platform meetings of EYCO, a strong need was expressed to share expertise and knowhow on implementing more youth empowerment and participation in our organizations. And relating to this, another ‘opening up’ evolution: the crossing-over of circus with other popular youth (street) art disciplines …involving also new youngsters and target groups in our non-formal youth education communities.
“Circus Moves on” brings experienced and new organizations/youth workers(trainers) together for this EMPOWERING OF YOUTH AND NEW GENERATIONS within youth circuses that want to ‘move on’ after the pioneer years. We will focus and reflect on two new change-maker topics :
1.
YOUTH PARTICPATION on the PEDAGOGICAL level of circus education
Despite the high professional standards, there is a common need to offer young people a pathway into the pedagogical practice at an earlier age, to get some responsibility via the assisting of trainers and circus activities. A few partner countries have an assistant trainer program on national level: Flanders (‘Circus/Animator’), Germany (‘BAG’) and France (‘BIAC’). These programs are directed to adolescents, giving them basic (circus) pedagogical skills and growing perspectives in youth work. They are responding to the traditional fallout of adolescents-lacking-challenges, which is well-known in youth work in general. Assistant concepts move us also towards ‘peer-to-peer’ and learner centred learning and reflect on youth participation in general.
2.
Participation of YOUTH CULTURE CROSS-OVERS in circus education
'Circus moves on’ is an invitation to step outside our own frame of circus methods and to look at other youth-art organizations as well as ‘non-organized’ youth street art communities and see how we can inspire each other? Several partners of this project integrated successful crossovers in their regular programs such as: Parkour, percussion, dance, etc. How can we enable the integration of new disciplines and popular youth culture formats, and especially in perspective of inclusive circus? How do these (often nonorganized) youngsters widen up our circus community? During active workshops by different partners the participants learn about those new cross-over vibes coming often bottom up by the youngsters
We use the celebration of 25 years of Cirkus in Beweging as an opportunity to bring a mix of 50 experienced and starting youth workers from 14 different youth circus organizations to Leuven for a 4-day mobility of youth workers with practical workshops and a seminar.
