Data showing the short term movements in the output of industries in the production, construction and market services sectors for January to March 2019.

The chart shows the time series for the indices of production, construction, and market services since 1999. The overall trend is the indices of market services and production have generally increased since 1999. Whereas, the index of construction has fluctuated over the same time period.

Main points

  • The Index of Market Services for Wales increased by 3.5% in the year to March 2019, compared with the previous twelve months. UK output increased by 2.2% over the same period. The growth in Wales was largely accounted for by an increase in Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities and Transport.
  • There was a 0.2% increase in the latest quarter compared with the previous quarter in Wales. UK output increased by 0.4%, over the same period.
  • The Index of Production for Wales increased by 1.0% in the year to March 2019, compared with the previous twelve months. UK output increased by 0.4% over the same period. The growth in Wales was largely accounted for by an increase in Food, Beverages and Tobacco and Other Manufacturing and Repair.
  • The short term trend for Wales shows a 3.5% increase when comparing the latest quarter to the previous quarter. UK output increased by 1.1% over the same period.
  • The Index of Construction for Wales increased by 19.2% in the year to March 2019, compared with the previous twelve months. UK output increased by 1.2% over the same period.
  • The short term trend for Wales shows a 3.5% decrease when comparing the latest quarter to the previous quarter. UK output increased by 1.4% over the same period.
