A slick of bold eyeliner on top of or below your lash line is perennially cool and has been for decades. Loved by everyone from Cleopatra (yep, eyeliner has been around for that long!) to Audrey Hepburn and more recently, well...everyone, eyeliner has the wondrous ability to pull together a make-up look. ‘Whether it’s smudged or sculpted, it will define the eyes with minimum effort,’ says make-up artist maestro and backstage regular at Fashion Week Lynsey Alexander. The hard part? Nailing the application and finding the perfect formula for the job. To make it that little bit easier we have whittled down the best liquid eyeliners and best pencil eyeliners and spoken to Lynsey Alexander for her top tips and tricks on how to apply them.

When it comes to eyeliner looks the possibilities are pretty much endless. There's the feline flick of course, a slick eyeliner look that brings with it a particularly Parisian sense of chic. There's the smudged-out kohl look - think Debbie Harry levels of rock 'n roll sass, or Kate Moss at Glastonbury. You can also make eyeliner subtle. Used on your upper waterline for example it can give the appearance of thicker lashes. There really are no rules when it comes to eyeliner.

Pro-Level Liquid Eyeliner Tips

'The technique I always use for liquid liner, is to apply a line as close to the lashes and extend,' advises Lynsey. 'For the perfect lazer-cut flick, use a My Kit Co or Muji tiny cotton bud dipped in makeup remover to shave the line from the underneath - the accuracy is in the remover not the application. '

How To Create Liquid Eyeliner Wings

To create that sharp wing, ‘you must look straight into a mirror and apply the outer corner wing with the eyes open’, advises Lynsey, ‘not only will this ensure it is symmetrical but also avoids the most common problem – when the flick gets lost in the socket line.’

The 10 Best Eyeliners and How To Apply Them

Lancu00f4me Le Crayon Kohl Brun, £18.501 of 10

Lancôme Le Crayon Kohl Brun, £18.50

BIG question…should you go for a pencil or liquid liner? Well, it really does depend on the look you're after. For a lived in smoky effect, Lynsey Alexander recommends a deep brown or black kohl. 'My favourite is Le Crayon Kohl Brun from Lancôme which blends in seamlessly and suits any eye colour.' Brown can be softer and as Lynsey states 'it's a little sexier and more mysterious than black'. To apply, 'start by lining the inner waterline and above the lash line with the kohl, this doesn't need to be neat as you will then smudge it out with a brush'.

Chanel Stylo Ombre et Contour, £252 of 10

Chanel Stylo Ombre et Contour, £25

A triple threat, this nifty stylo from Chanel can be used as a kohl along the waterline, as a graphic liner atop the lash line or even as an eyeshadow. The texture is so creamy and silky you can really smudge and blend it in to your hearts content!

Kat Von D Ink Well Long-Wear Matte Eyeliner, £173 of 10

Kat Von D Ink Well Long-Wear Matte Eyeliner, £17

For those of us who love the razor-sharp liner look, this one ticks all the boxes. Long-lasting? Check. Quick-drying? Check. Easy to apply? Check! To create the sharp wing, 'you must look straight into a mirror and apply the outer corner wing with the eyes open', advises Lynsey, 'not only will this ensure it is symmetrical but also avoids the most common problem – when the flick gets lost in the socket line.'

Yves Saint Laurent Dessin du Regard Pencil and Blending Tip, £214 of 10

Yves Saint Laurent Dessin du Regard Pencil and Blending Tip, £21

Pencils, especially over-used ones, can often feel quite dry and tricky to apply. But YSL's Dessin Du Regard Pencil is an exception – with nourishing jojoba oil and waxes, the formula literally melts onto skin and blends in seamlessly. Lynsey recommends 'for night-time when you want the look to be more 'rock chick' add liner along the water-line, but for day time you can leave it out for a softer finish.'

MAC Kajal Crayon, £175 of 10

MAC Kajal Crayon, £17

Dior Diorshow On Stage Liner, £26

Rock the colour of the season (ruby red of course) on your eyelids with Dior's On Stage Liner. The felt-tip pen makes application a doddle, and the bright shade will stand out on paired-back makeup so all eyes are, well, on the eyes! 'Colour with makeup is all about individuality, especially when it comes to the eyes,' says Lynsey, 'experiment, have fun and don't make it too serious.'

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, £19.507 of 10

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, £19.50

This award-winning eyeliner is a best-seller for good reason. Packed with pigment, the gel formula will literally not budge all day/night. Just be sure to work quickly as it dries in seconds – dip a fine brush in the pot and apply in even strokes. Top trick? 'The accuracy is in the remover not the application,' says Lynsey, 'for the perfect lazer-cut flick, use a Muji tiny cotton bud dipped in makeup remover to shave the line from underneath, as thin as you wish it to be'.

Hourglass 1.5mm Mechanical Gel Eye Liner, £168 of 10

Hourglass 1.5mm Mechanical Gel Eye Liner, £16

'There were lots of disconnected, exaggerated and quirky eyeliners seen on the runway this season,' says Lynsey, 'the message is – it doesn't have to be too grown up and perfect, make it playful.' If you're feeling brave and want to experiment with graphic shapes and lines, Hourglass Mechanical Gel Eye Liner is your best bet. With a 1.5mm tip you have so much control and can be super precise.
