A mobile phone or tablet can now be used to tour the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens.
Τhe Museum of Cycladic Art is dedicated to the study and promotion of ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus, with special emphasis on Cycladic Art of the 3rd millennium BC.
It was founded in 1986, to house the collection of Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris. Since then it has grown in size to accommodate new acquisitions, obtained either through direct purchases or through donations by important collectors and institutions.
After visitors scan the QR code, they will be able to browse the permanent collections and read interesting information about the special exhibits, which are indicated by numbered markings on the captions of the objects.
This new method is a safe way of going on an educational tour, as each visitor watches the digital tour from their own device.
Some of the tours include:
- Cycladic Art: The Cycladic collection is one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of Cycladic antiquities worldwide. It comprises marble figurines and vessels, bronze tools and weapons, clay vases, and other artefacts of the Early Bronze Age from the Cyclades.
- Ancient Greek Art: The exhibition has retained a chronological structure –necessary in order to accommodate approximately 400 artefacts ranging in date from the 2nd millennium BC (focusing on material from Minoan Crete and Mycenaean Greece) to the 4th century AD– but builds and extends its narrative upon the concept of the image.
- Cypriot Art: The MCA collection of Ancient Cypriot Art (one of the largest outside Cyprus) comprises unique prehistoric figurines, Archaic and Classical sculptures, inscriptions, bronzes, coins, exquisite gold jewellery, impressive glasswork, and a wide array of ceramics ranging in date from the 4th millennium BC to Medieval times.
- Scenes from Daily Life in Antiquity: Visitors are invited into a virtual tour in time and space that starts from the world of gods and heroes, goes through the realm of Eros, follows the activities of everyday women and men in their private and public life, explores their religious behaviour, and concludes with their attitudes against death and their beliefs about the Underworld.
The tours are in Greek, English and French.
