Digital Wages

HERfinance is supporting employers to responsibly digitize wage payments for low-income workers in global supply chains in Bangladesh, Egypt, and Cambodia, through HERfinance Digital Wages Program.

Impact: Bangladesh

From 2015 to 2020, HERfinance Digital Wages Program worked with 10 global buyers and 75 garment factories in Dhaka and Chittagong in Bangladesh, supported by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and three implementing partners: Change Associates, MAMATA, and Young Power in Social Action (YPSA). By December 2019, 64 factories (representing 148,954 workers, 57 percent of them female) had adopted digital wages, and more than 100,400 workers were being paid via a bKash or Dutch-Bangla Bank Rocket payroll account. The program is on track to complete the digitization process in these factories by August 2020.

HERfinance Digital Wages

Toolkit for Factory Managers

HERfinance Digital Wages Toolkit is a technology tool to support managers to transition from cash to digital wages. Based on learning from HERfinance Digital Wages Program in Bangladesh, this toolkit helps employers and managers to digitize their payroll in a responsible way that considers the needs of all workers, particularly female workers.

An online version is available in English, Arabic, Bangla, Khmer, and Simplified Chinese.

An offline, mobile app format can be downloaded from the Google Play store and is optimized for Android smart phones and tablets.

HERfinance Digital Wages

Curriculum for Implementing Partners

The six HERfinance Digital Wages training modules have been developed for the Bangladeshi context. The modules cover the following topics:

Introduction to Digital Financial Services
Using Digital Financial Products and Services
Introduction to Financial Planning and Managing Your Money
Budgeting
Savings
Talking About Finances with Your Family

Each module includes a proposed training agenda, key messages to emphasize during the training, the list of materials needed to conduct the training, and examples of games and plays. There are also Trainer’s Tips which provide helpful information about how to conduct a session and how to encourage participation.

Tech Learning Tool

HERfinance Digital Wages Tech Learning Tool uses engaging films, quizzes, and animations to support workers to increase their financial health and benefit from digital wages. The tool also increases workers' digital literacy and confidence to use technology, especially for women.

HERfinance Digital Wages Tech Learning Tool, developed with QuizRR, includes six training modules, each 15-20 minutes long, based on HERfinance Digital Wages training curriculum. The tool can be used either standalone or as part of a blending training program.

HERfinance Digital Wages Tech Learning Tool is available in Arabic, Bangla, Khmer, and Vietnamese.

Videos and Animations

HERfinance Digital Wages videos and animation, developed with QuizRR, are part of HERfinance Digital Wages Tech Learning Tool in Bangladesh and Cambodia. All films and animations are directly available on our HERproject YouTube channel, and give engaging guidance and information for workers around financial services and improving financial health. They follow HERfinance Digital Wages curriculum, and can be used during training, or shown on their own—such as in factory canteens.
