Astro Boy (鉄腕アトム)

2021 marks the 70th anniversary of Astro Boy’s first appearance! Celebrate the year with this LEGO Ideas set, based on one of Japan’s most iconic creations.

Initially created for a short manga series back in 1951 by Osamu Tezuka, Astro Boy has become one of the most beloved Japanese characters of all time and a cultural icon.

Astro Boy (or Mighty Atom as he’s known in Japan), follows the story of an android with human emotions. Built by the robotics engineer Dr. Umataro Tenma, Astro was meant to be a robotic version of Tenma’s deceased son. In the comics, Astro goes on several misadventures on his journey to becoming an average human boy.

Osamu Tezuka created the story as a parable for exploring themes about science coexisting with humanity. The character’s popularity has spanned across generations and countries, being adapted into three animated series, feature films, action figures, video games, clothing, stamps, trading cards, food products and more.

Astro’s first animated series in 1963 is largely credited for developing Japanese anime, introducing unique visual aesthetics that have influenced all anime shows to date. Astro Boy is also credited as the first overseas cartoon to break into the American market. Since his creation, the Astro Boy manga has sold over 100 million copies worldwide.

This LEGO Ideas set celebrates all 70 years of Astro Boy’s legacy with a poseable figure, based on Astro Boy’s iconic likeness.

This conceptual set includes:
  • 19 points of articulation (neck, arms, elbows, wrists, fingers and hips)
  • Removable exterior parts to reveal Astro Boy’s inner workings
  • Attachable rear and arm cannons
  • An LED light-up heart inside his chest
