The Secretariat of the Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network is pleased to announce that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The 5-year MoU will be the basis for cooperation between the two organizations. It will further enhance the engagement of stakeholders from the region in the Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network.

Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network’s Executive Director Bertrand de La Chapelle and United Nations ECLAC Executive Secretary Alicia Bárcena signed the cooperation agreement in January 2019. It is the first formal Memorandum of Understanding that the Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network concludes with an international organization.

The Secretariat of the Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network looks forward to working together with the United Nations ECLAC to foster policy coherence and address cross-border challenges on the internet in the region and at the global level:

“Latin America and the Caribbeans are in the middle of a great digital transformation of the economy and society. This new partnership with the United Nations ECLAC is an important step for the Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network. It will help raise awareness, strengthen the stakeholder engagement in the region, and advance the development of policy standards and operational solutions.”

Paul Fehlinger, Deputy Director, Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network

The Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network and the United Nations ECLAC organized their first joint regional conference on November 22, 2018, at ECLAC’s Headquarters in Santiago, Chile. The Conference gathered over 60 regional high-level representatives from governments, the private sector and civil society to discuss cross-border data flows, privacy and data protection in Latin America, and included interactive workshops corresponding to the three thematic Programs of the Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network: Data & Jurisdiction, Content & Jurisdiction and Domains & Jurisdiction.

The United Nations ECLAC is also one of six institutional supporters of the 3rd Global Conference of the Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network on June 3-5, 2019 in Berlin, Germany, along with the Council of Europe, European Commission, ICANN, OECD and UNESCO.
