The management of esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula is still controversial. Members of the European Reference Network for Rare Inherited Congenital Anomalies (ERNICA) conducted a consensus conference based on opinions of 19 experts from 9 European countries on Diagnostics, Preoperative, Operative, and Postoperative Management (Dingemann C et al, Eur J Pediatr Surg. 2019, DOI: 10.1055/s-0039-1693116).

ERNICA representatives are interested to know to what extent the opinion of the pediatric surgical community differs from the expert statements.

Therefore, we would greatly appreciate if you could take part in the anonymous online survey below. Completing the questionnaire including 52 items will take about 10 minutes. We would like to emphasize that the following questionnaire is exclusively about the management of patients with esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula (exclusion of other types, such as long-gap esophageal atresia).

Some of the questions might appear to be redundant or duplicate. Please do not be irritated by this as some of the questions will be indeed asked twice, but in different sections (i.e. preoperative management and intraoperative management).

While answering the questionnaire you might notice ambiguity around some of the statements. These issues were discussed during the Consensus Conference, but this will obviously not be possible during the online survey. Nonetheless, we would like to pose exactly the same questions to ensure comparability.

PLEASE NOTE THAT OF THE 52 ITEMS, CONSENSUS WAS REACHED ON SOME, BUT NOT ALL, so do not feel pressured into giving a higher score. At the end of the survey, you will be able to see graphically how your opinion compares with that of all the survey respondents.

We would like to thank you in advance for participating. Please do not hesitate to contact us in case of any further questions.

Kind regards,

Carmen Dingemann1, Benno Ure1, Rene Wijnen2, Simon Eaton3
