Civil Nuclear Constabulary

Assistant Chief Constable

You will be responsible for contributing to the creation of the vision and setting direction and culture for the Force as part of the Executive Team that builds public and organisational confidence and trust. This will ultimately enable the delivery of an effective policing service.

Welcome from Susan Johnson OBE, Chair of the Civil Nuclear Police Authority

Dear applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the role of Assistant Chief Constable (ACC) (Operations) for the Civil Nuclear Constabulary
(CNC).

The CNC carries out a unique role in UK policing keeping the public safe by providing specialised police firearms capabilities at 10 civil nuclear sites around the country, as well as protecting nuclear material when in transit around the world. The Constabulary also regularly provides support to local police forces around the sites we protect and is part of the national armed policing capability.  CNC employs over 1,600 police officers and support staff at various locations across the UK and is headquartered in Culham, Oxfordshire.

The global threats to energy security continue to evolve.  We work alongside the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, our sponsoring department, to counter these threats and we work in close partnership with our nuclear industry partners, wider policing and the security defence sectors to protect the public.  The UK Government’s commitment to energy security, and to nuclear energy in particular, means that CNC will continue to play a central role in protecting our country’s energy assets for many years to come.  Parliament is currently considering changes in the Energy Bill which, if enacted, will enable CNC to provide protection for other critical national infrastructure sites.

Today there is a sharp focus on improving standards of behaviour and culture across policing in the UK due to a number of high profile cases and dreadful crimes committed by serving and ex police officers.  As a sector, policing risks losing the trust and confidence of those we serve.

Our new Assistant Chief Constable will play a leading role in ensuring the CNC has a highly trained, skilled and professional workforce that merits the respect and trust of our communities, stakeholders and funders.  Our Strategic Plan 2023/26 sets out bold and ambitious priorities for the next three years.  Central to these are living our values, serving the public and delivering our core Mission efficiently and effectively.  As a member of the senior executive team, the ACC will be working alongside highly engaged and committed individuals who are equally ambitious for the organisation and our staff.

As the governing body for the CNC, the Civil Nuclear Police Authority are seeking someone who can instil confidence, drive positive change, thrive in a environment of challenge, is solution focused and leads by example.

If you are successful you will be joining an organisation that holds a unique national and international standing in the nuclear energy security industry.  CNC is a mission-driven organisation that is proud, agile and inclusive.  If you have the qualities we are seeking, we very much look forward to hearing from you.
