Help KARAMA!

Tax deductible
Dear friends and supporters of Karama,

Karama is a volunteer-based organization that offers events throughout the year showcasing the beauty of Arab culture, educating the public on issues of importance to the Arab World, particularly Palestine, and highlighting the effects of war and dispossession on the peoples of the region.

In order to fund our remaining events for this year, and to insure adequate funding for the 2019 Arab Film Festival, Karama needs $5,000 of immediate additional support.

While this may seem like a lot, it is a relatively small amount given the amount of work Karama does and the large impact it has on our city and beyond.

As we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, all donations are tax deductible!  If you would like your donation to go to a specific project (like the San Diego Arab Film Festival or the social studies teachers conference), just specify when you make your donation.  We will dedicate your donation for that purpose.

Many of you have attended one or more of our events, which last year alone included all of the following:

-Attending the MLK All Peoples Breakfast, where we provided information on the Arab World;
-Hosting a panel discussion titled Communities Unite to Confront Hate;
-Hosting the first U.S. appearance of Shorouq Children’s Debke and Girls Hip Hop group from Deheisheh refugee camp in Palestine;
-Staffing a booth, presenting and providing free educational materials to teachers at the California Council for the Social Studies’ annual conference in Sacramento, CA;
-Helping to organize two Palestinian Prisoner Hunger Strike vigils;
-Helping to organize the 69th annual commemoration of the Nakba;
-Hosting Alison Weir, of If Americans Knew, for a workshop at the Carmel Valley Public Library;
-Hosting a panel discussion titled The Arab World in the Era of Trump, with professors Seif Da'na and Rabab Abdulhadi;
-Organizing the 6th annual Arab Film Festival with over 1000 attendees;
-Staffing a booth, presenting and providing free educational materials to teachers at the National Council for the Social Studies’ annual conference in San Francisco, CA;
-Helping to organize a protest of the Trump administration’s illegal decision to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem;
-Displaying historic photographs of Palestine at the Centro Cultural de la Raza, UCSD, Palomar College and other locations throughout Southern California; and,
-Creating and managing the Palestine Photo Project website:  www.palestinephotoproject.org, which experienced over a half million hits its first year.

So far in 2018, Karama has been busy at work organizing or taking part in the following events:

-Attending the MLK All Peoples Breakfast, where we provided information on the Arab World;
-Hosting a donor appreciation dinner;
-Staffing a booth, presenting and providing free educational material to teachers at the California Council for the Social Studies’ annual conference in San Diego, CA;
-Hosting renowned professor Seif Da’na’s presentation on the crisis in Yemen;
-Hosting a discussion by Palestinian activist Raja Eghbarieh;
-Helping to Organize the 70th annual commemoration of the Nakba; and,
-Organizing a showing of Occupation of the American Mind at San Diego Central Library.

But our work for 2018 is not done!  In the coming months, Karama will take part in the following:

 September 22, 2018: Organizing a showing of Annemarie Jacir’s critically acclaimed film, Wajib, at the Museum of Photographic Art.

October 25, 2018: Hosting a pre-election “Dignitary Dinner” which brings together all local Arab and Muslim organizations with elected officials and candidates for elected office.

November 30-December 2, 2018: Staffing a booth, presenting and providing free educational materials at the National Council for the Social Studies’ annual conference in Chicago, Il.

Our calendar for 2019 is equally full, and includes the 7th annual Arab Film Festival, our largest festival to date.

Karama carefully chooses all events and programs on which to expend our limited time and energy.  We focus on those areas of greatest need and largest impact.  We do our best to strike a balance between cultural and political programs, as well as balancing our focus on the different issues and regions of the Arab World.  We do all of this on a limited budget.  This is where you come in.  Please do your part, large or small, to help Karama achieve its goal of raising $5,000.  Without your support, our work simply would not be possible.

Thank you in advance for your support and encouragement of this important work.

 Sincerely,

 The Karama Board of Directors
