The Queen's Platinum Jubilee

This year, Her Majesty The Queen becomes the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service. Known for her sense of duty and her devotion to a life of service, she has been an important figurehead for the UK and the Commonwealth during times of enormous social change.

To celebrate there are many events taking place across Kent to mark this fantastic achievement, including the lighting of beacons across the county on 2 June and street parties across the long Jubilee weekend.

After waiving the regular application fee, KCC’s Highways team received an incredible 595 requests for road closures to host street parties. The full list of approved road closures, by District, can be found on our Traffic Order - Platinum Jubilee webpage.

The deadline for road closures applications is now passed but requests to hang bunting or signs from street lights can be made up to 4pm on 27 May. If you want to apply visit our Street lights webpage.

KCC Members are marking the occasion in a slightly different way by collectively giving 70 hours of time to volunteering in their local communities.

The challenge for KCC councillors to collectively give an hour of time for every year of service given by the Queen, was laid down last month jointly by Leader Roger Gough and Chairman Lesley Game, with Lesley kicking off the initiative by volunteering at Kitchen Social in Margate. Vice-Chairman Gary Cooke also volunteered at the Heart of Kent Hospice Shop in Park Wood, Maidstone.

We will be showing the progress towards the target of 70 hours on our Map along with where there will be beacon lightings on Thursday 2 June and local events across the long weekend.

Lesley Game has also launched a Schools Platinum Jubilee Baking Competition and is inviting students in three age groups to take part. Find out more and get baking!

  • Wise Words for Her Majesty

    I am a Library Volunteer in Canterbury Library. I help to run the’Wise Words for Well-being’ group. Our group has written a composite poem for the Queen’s platinum jubilee; a poem put together by choosing passages written by different people in our group and sewing them together into a coherent single piece. Some people wrote about childhood memories of the Queen, others took more contemporary themes. We hope the Library staff will use it for a commemorative video to mark this jubilee.

  • New Romney Beacon Lighting and Open Air Event

    Jubilee Beacon Lighting event, with a free evening of family entertainment for all the family, including music by Swing Band and local DJ, Morris Dancing, Fancy Dress parade, children's make tent, and hot and cold refreshment vendors, will take place on The Greens, Littlestone, on June 2nd, 2022 6.30pm -- 10.15pm. It will include the Beacon Lighting at 9.45pm, accompanied by bugler.   • St Thomas's Fun Day

    I am a volunteer at St Thomas's Church in Pennington Road, Southborough. I am the team leader for our Fundraising & Events Team and also for the Platinum Jubilee Party team. I love being part of the team and working with such wonderful, interesting and creative people.


    For the Queens Platinum Jubilee we are hosting a Fun Day on Sunday 5th June. We will be using the grounds in front of the church and the parish room at the back of the church.   • Big Lunch

    On Sunday 5th June, we will be hosting the Big Lunch, which will be a family picnic on Shorne Common in Mill Hill Lane. This will run from 11am to 4pm, and everyone is welcome to join in.

  • Jubilee Beacon Lighting 2nd June 2022

    On Thursday 2nd June, we will be having a Jubilee Beacon on Shorne Common during the evening. The beacon will be lit at 9.45pm, but residents are invited to gather on the Common from 8pm.

  • The Street Party

    On Saturday 4th June, we are planning to hold a Street Party in The Street between 12 noon and 2pm. We will be serving food for children and parishioners, and there will also be activities for all ages in the Village Hall.

    Please note that in order to facilitate this, we have applied for a closure of The Street to through traffic between number 10 The Street and Butchers Hill, from 11am to 3pm. We hope that you will support the street party and the proposed closure of The Street on this special occasion.

  • Platinum Jubilee events in Hadlow

    Carnival Procession starts 12 noon from Hadlow village centre to Williams Field. Open to all - sing, dance, dress up, be outrageous or just come as you are.

    THE BIG JUBILEE LUNCH Sunday 5 June 12 noon to 3pm at Williams Field. A whole village event. Bring a picnic and join in the fun. Bouncy castle, teas, beer tent, amusements, tug-o-war, games, music and entertainment and lots more.


  • 'Your Jubilee Broadstairs' 3rd June. Pierremont Hall.

    This is an event being spearheaded and supported by a significant number of volunteers in our town.

    Broadstairs Town Team are hosting a free celebration event - 'Your Jubilee Broadstairs' on 3rd June 2022 to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in the centre of Broadstairs, for our entire community to participate in and enjoy.

    It will be held in Pierremont Hall and the surrounding area.

    We want to capture local people’s individual memories and stories linked to events from the Coronation in 1953 right through all Jubilees to the present day.

  • The Chairman Lesley Game talks about her volunteering experience

    I first found out about Kitchen Social from a meeting I had with the founder Lucy Gray.

    They support the local community by tackling the root causes of poverty and issues such as poor health, isolation and low skills over a six-month period. They deliver education programmes and in particular food education, health and well-being in a fun and interesting way, as well as providing weekly access to food for struggling families.

    Whilst at Kitchen Social, I spent time with Lucy at her stall which is run every Saturday morning, selling at very reduced prices bowls of fruit and vegetables... Continue reading
