Review of Support for Disabled Students

Good afternoon,

We're writing to let you know that SAAS are gathering views and opinions related to support for disabled students in both further and higher education. SAAS are gathering these views on behalf of the Scottish Government.

Three surveys in total have been published today:

One for staff who either work in institutions or provide information, advice and support to disabled students

One for disabled students or their parents/carers/representatives within Further Education

One for disabled students or their parents/carers/representatives within Higher Education

Graduates and past students and their parents, carers, or representatives are also most welcome to complete the surveys.

This is a unique opportunity to share your views and experiences of the current system of support for disabled students. While the surveys are mostly concerned with financial support (for example the Disabled Students' Allowance within the Higher education survey), there are plenty of opportunities to share your views about disabled student support more generally.

You may want to share your experience of trying to access DSA, or talk about what funds were available to support with travel to college, how accessible you found the course or how inclusive your tutors were. You may want to share your experience of arranging reasonable adjustments or how you found the processes available to make appeals or complaints related to disability issues.

The surveys are multiple choice to make it easier for you to respond, however there are spaces to write comments as well. While we appreciate there are a lot of questions to answer, we wanted to ensure the surveys covered the full scope of disabled student support, but you can skip any that you feel are not relevant to you.

SAAS will gather and analyse the responses before submitting a paper of recommendations to Richard Lochhead MSP, Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science. Lead Scotland have been key members of the steering group that was set up by SAAS to inform and influence the design of the surveys and we will be involved in reviewing the responses and developing recommendations.

The surveys will remain open until Friday 3rd April. Please consider responding or sharing this email with any relevant networks you are part of so we have enough evidence to make recommendations for positive changes.

Thank you,

Rebecca Scarlett
