THE WARDS CORNER PLAN
B U L L E T I N

A brief update for friends and supporters of our peoples plan to save the Latin Village from demolition and create a new cultural hub for everyone!

FOR-WARDS CORNER!

The peoples plan is advancing! In combination with the £9,300 raised on Crowdfunder, a successful grant application has taken us to our £15,000 target! We have now commissioned specialist consultants to prepare our business model, capital funding strategy and governance structures.

Design work is progressing well, with new internal layouts for the refurbished market hall and upper levels - including a range of community and small business spaces - now agreed.
While the above image - one of our development studies - isn't the final proposal, we hope it suggests how sensitive extensions and repairs can return the building to its former glory.

Ahead of the full planning application, we hope to submit drawings for pre-planning guidance in the coming weeks. As the scheme develops further, we look forward to sharing more details as we begin public consultations - so watch out for updates on our forthcoming exhibition!

THE NEW ECONOMICS FOUNDATION BACKS OUR PEOPLES PLAN!

We are very excited that NEF - one of Britain's leading think tanks - have pledged substantial material support for our campaign, calling on Haringey Council to:

"adopt this new model and remove the threat looming over Latin Village. It will only take a matter of hours to demolish Latin Village, but it will take a lot longer for the council to rebuild their reputation after destroying an essential part of the local economy"

You can read their full statement here.

YES WE CAN!

In the market, traders are fighting back against the compulsory purchase order: recently boycotting a meeting with Grainger - the developer - and bullying "'market managers" (asset strippers) Quarterbridge to demonstrate outside. We will not collaborate in our own dispossession!
Elsewhere, we are grateful to the Haringey Council Regeneration Scrutiny Committee for inviting us to give evidence in support of our plan as part of their review of Grainger's scheme. We are demanding that council leader Joe Ejiofor halts all progress on the CPO and publishes the development agreement with Grainger.
To fund our legal campaign, we're having a party at Grow Tottenham on Saturday, March 23rd, 2pm-5am - so if you like Latin food and great DJ's, buy a ticket and come along! We've already raised £13k of our £15k target and you can donate here.
MEDIA ROUND-UP!

We're not just fighting to save the market, but to change how urban development happens nationally - so we're excited our struggle featured on ITV News, in The Guardian, The Metro, Tottenham Community Press and more:
The New Statesman carried this excellent portrait of the market - it's cultural significance, the abusive treatment of traders and our hopes for the peoples plan - by Anoosh Chakelian, who writes:

“"This is the litmus test for the Labour party – what does Corbynism mean in office? [...]
It’s not politically tenable that the first Corbyn council in the country is going to displace a migrant working-class community to build 200 luxury flats.""
On Novara Media, Camilla Mijola's in-depth feature - rooted in the markets vital function for migrants - highlights the ambition of the Peoples Plan to act as a catalyst for a community wealth building project in Tottenham, stating:

"The N15 Development Trust wants to democratise the regeneration process by handing over decision-making, redevelopment plans and long-term management of the TFL-owned site to the local community. If the trust succeeds, profits will be reinvested into the borough and the people who live in it."

THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!

While the CPO decision is for demolition, their pieces of paper mean nothing against the strength of our community: we will fight them every step of the way!

If you would like to support the campaign, why not drop us a line on solidarity@wardscornerplan.org and let us know how you'd like to help?

Otherwise, watch out for updates, events and most importantly,
d e m o n s t r a t i o n s !!

See you soon,
