Kilcreggan Urban Farm onto next stage of competition

Kilcreggan Urban Farm has been picked to go forward as Mid and East Antrim Borough Council's elected business for Northern Ireland's 'Best Small Visitor Attraction', out voting Glenarm Castle and Whitehead Railway Museum.

Back in February, this competition was launched in partnership with Tourism NI and local councils, with Belfast City Airport offering small visitor attractions from across N. Ireland the chance to win £30,000 of free marketing support and brand visibility at the airport.

The farm was established 20 years ago, thanks to the idea of a tenant, Linda Bennett, who loves animals and knew that spending time caring for animals and in nature made her feel good and improved her life. She felt others could also benefit and so began the creation of a much-loved community space.

What has now developed is a visitor attraction that operates as a social firm, engaging service users in all aspects of running a busy and successful garden centre and urban farm.

Service users can engage in therapeutic activities and demonstrate their skills, passion and knowledge for what they do with visitors and guests.

The next stage is a visit by the judges and we wish Kilcreggan Urban Farm the best of luck!

Joint promotion for Mid and East Antrim at Balmoral

This year Council's tourism and economic development sections joined forces to support the linkages of food production and food tourism in the NI Food Pavilion at the Balmoral Show.

Record high numbers of over 120,000 attended this years show, and visitors could learn more about what Mid & East Antrim has to offer from food producers to tourism options!

Over the 4 days local food producers Flossy Treats, Linda’s Original, Sea Sugar Confectionary and H’Evans Truffles successfully exhibited with Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, selling their produce, engaging with new customers and promoting new products to the large crowds in attendance.

Hastings Hotels encourage passion for local food
The Executive Head Chef team at Hastings Hotels recently went out and about to meet and greet Mid and East Antrim's food producers, thanks to a bespoke tour organised by Toast the Coast Food Tours and encouraged by the Ballygally Castle Hotel.

Their food adventure included boats,  Glenarm organic salmon, Glens of Antrim lamb, foraging, fire and outdoor cookery with Northern Ireland Survival School, not to mention Ann's Pantry offering the best bread & Christmas pudding ...... all in one action packed day.
Hastings Hotels use carefully selected local and seasonal quality foods to enable their chefs to prepare and create the most delicious dishes. Hopefully they found lots of inspiration!
WorldHost Golf Ambassadors ready with warm welcome

Well done to two fantastic groups of newly graduated WorldHost Golf Ambassadors who attended courses in Galgorm Spa and Golf Resort and Cairndhu Golf Club.  Great to see local business support and enthusiasm for The Open and our golf courses.

With over 190,000 spectators and visitors from across the world expected to be in attendance at The 148th Open at Royal Portrush, this training for the tourism and hospitality industry, is important to provide the necessary skills and resources to create a warm and friendly welcome and showcase the area.

Tourism NI expects that the economic benefit of The Open will be an estimated £80 million.  #nimadeforgolf
Hospitality speed networking success
Earlier this year the Ballymena area tourism cluster felt there was a need for front line staff to have more knowledge on things to do around the local area so they could encourage visitors to lengthen their stay. In May, staff from Galgorm Spa and Golf Resort, the Adair Arms Hotel and local bed and breakfast and self-catering providers attended a speed networking event in the Adair Arms.

Attraction, experience and activity businesses attended the event including The Gobbins, Galgorm Castle Fairy Trail, Midtown Makers Studio and Shop, Townland Tours, Roots Revealed, Ushkeytours and Songbird Ceramics to name but a few. Local businesses had five minutes to talk in one to one exchanges.  For full story click here.

New developments at Galgorm Fairy Trail

Set in the grounds of the stunning Galgorm Castle Estate, is a magical fairy kingdom. A fairy library holds the secrets to the fairy realm, whilst a shopping village caters for the everyday needs of the modern fairy.
Watch out for the trolls though, who've been cast out by the fairies for their nuisances and bad deeds. These are just some of the delights you'll find when you visit this ever expanding and enchanting woodland trail. New additions also include the Hidden Village and more secret trails.

Recently coming under new management, the Galgorm Castle Fairy Trail has benefitted from a newly refurbished cottage, rebranded as Toadstool Cottage - easily recognised by the trademark toadstools that inhabit the front lawn.  Inside you'll be treated to decorative wall art that makes this an excellent start and end for trail users experience.

Serving hot and cold drinks, gifts and confectionery, the cottage is also available for private parties and events.  Inside you can get up close with the most exquisite fairy homes and sign up for various craft classes. Watch out for their upcoming Fairy Festival on Sunday 30 June, guaranteed to be a fairytastic family day out!

Dobbins Inn's special face lift takes shape

Delighted to see progress being made on Dobbins Inn hotel. The building has been dated to c.1520s with research and an early 1567 map providing the inspiration for the reinterpretation of the building.  It's known that medieval tower houses were rendered to protect the buildings from the elements, which is why the stone on the outside has been covered to ensure the Inn stands for another 400 years!  The second phase of works commenced on 14 May but the hotel is open for business as normal, with access through the main entrance.
Dobbins Inn has also been advised that they can leave the internal reception wall exposed. Now contractors need to work their magic for it to stand the test of time.

Project is supported by the Carrickfergus Townscape Heritage Initiative through funding from the National Heritage Lottery Fund and Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.

Arthur Cottage perfect setting for traditional cooking
In January, The Ulster-Scots Agency spent two days filming at Arthur Cottage in Cullybackey, This cottage is the ancestral homestead of United States President Chester A Arthur. The weather was crisp and frosty but inside the traditional thatched cottage was warmed by a traditional turf fire as they filmed local celebrity chef Paula McIntyre MBE as she prepared a number of Ulster-Scots inspired dishes. Paula cooked some of the dishes in the traditional way on a griddle over the turf fire. This is a ‘wee taster’ of what’s to come. There will be a series of 12 short videos featuring Paula prepare Ulster-Scots inspired dishes which will be published online and supported by a paper publication. It will include recipes and stories about the food and the local ingredients used by Paula including dulse (dried seaweed).

Awards success for Carnfunnock Country Park

Congratulations to Carnfunnock Country Park in Larne who won the ‘Gold Star Best Family Park’ award and was a finalist in the ‘Best Family Fun and Entertainment’ category at the recent Families First NI Awards 2019.

Tour guide course supports continued tourism growth

Congratulations to local Tour Guiding students who completed an 8 week Level 2 course at The Gobbins, ideal for those interested in the travel and tourism industry. It provides learners with skills to enable them to develop a tour commentary and lead groups on a guided tour.

The aim of the course is to enable learners to understand the role of a tour guide, illustrate the structure of the tourism industry in our own region, develop and deliver a short tour commentary and understand the health and safety implications.

Now's an exciting time to pursue or develop a career in the tourism industry. Employment in the sector now accounts for about one in 10 of all jobs in Northern Ireland and employment levels are around 5% higher than during the lowest point of the 2012 recession.

For further information on how you can develop your training needs, within this growing sector, contact Lorraine Neill, Northern Regional College E: lorraine.neil@nrc.ac.uk
