A message from your Vice-Chancellor

Following the recent coronavirus outbreak, I know many of you are concerned and anxious. Some of you have had difficult experiences in recent weeks, including racist incidents. Racism is never acceptable and we are saddened that some of you have experienced it in our city. Please make use of all our services which are available to support you.

We are changing how we run the University over the spring break and into the summer term, when peak disruption caused by the virus is expected. Throughout this difficult period, we will focus on enabling you to complete your studies.

We are committed to ensuring you progress to the next academic year and can complete your course. We are looking at ways to adjust teaching and assessments, including remote learning, and will let you know about this as soon as we can.

The situation with travel is changing rapidly. Some of you may not be able to get back to London for the start of the next term. We will do everything we can to support you and your studies if this is the case.

Please read the rest of this note, which contains important information. We are sending this to your UAL and personal email to make sure you see it.

I hope you enjoy the spring break.

Nigel Carrington, Vice-Chancellor, University of the Arts London

Need to know

Health advice

The UK government has updated its advice for people with coronavirus symptoms. You must stay at home and not come into college for seven days if you have either:

  • a high temperature
  • a new, continuous cough

In the interests of everyone, please follow the UK National Health Service guidance on hygiene, contact with others and self-isolation. Links to advice for people self-isolating can be found on our website.

Traveling during the break

Many of you plan to travel home during the spring break. Before you travel, please ensure you review the advice from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

Travel restrictions may prevent you from returning to UAL at the start of next term. If you are unable to return to the UK due to the outbreak or choose to remain at home, you should email Mark Crawley, Dean of Students, on m.crawley@arts.ac.uk.

If you are not able to return following the break, UAL remains committed to your teaching and assessment.

If you are on a placement outside the UK, and wish to return to the UK, please contact Mark Crawley, Dean of Students, on m.crawley@arts.ac.uk.

Remote learning and assessment

We will move teaching online or find alternative approaches and assessment tasks. We will communicate the next steps to you over the spring break.

Visit our help and support pages to see the many ways we can support you with your academic life, mental and physical health, safety and with practical advice on everything from money management to visas.

How is your final degree classification calculated?

Your final degree classification is a recognition of the overall standard of the work you have submitted whilst studying on your course. Some students develop their abilities over time and some students are consistent throughout their studies. In order to recognise that some students develop and learn at a different pace, UAL has changed the way in which final classifications are calculated.

From 2019/20, the majority of graduating undergraduate students will have their final classification calculated using two separate algorithms. Classification One is a calculation based on the grades achieved in the final year of an undergraduate degree. Classification Two uses all of the grades from the final year of an undergraduate course and 100 credits from the second year. The 100 credits chosen will be those that represent the strongest performance of a student in their second year.

The final grade will be the outcome which provides the most accurate representation of a student’s abilities, that which gives the better grade of the two results provided. Both final grades will be based on the individual unit results achieved on UAL’s current letter grade marking scale. Learn more about UAL's Assessment Criteria and Marking Scale.
