Our half-termly newsletter aims to share all the latest KMPF news and initiatives, highlight new and upcoming outreach events and activities and provide you with resources and opportunities to support the aspirations and attainment of young people in Kent and Medway.

KMPF Covid Recovery Fund making an impact

More than 3,000 students across Kent and Medway have so far benefited from projects financed through the KMPF Covid Recovery Fund. A total of 29 funded projects have taken place, reaching 3,308 students, 34% of whom were from KMPF target groups – including those who live in areas where there is a low level of participation in higher education.

University of Kent Succeed Programme

Students in Year 12 or the first year of their Level 3 studies are being invited to apply for a programme designed to help them make informed decisions about what to do after the end of their Level 3 studies.  The University of Kent Succeed Programme encourages young people in Kent and Medway to explore the opportunities and challenges offered by university study.

UASC Student Ambassador Stories

Getting to university is a huge achievement, and even more so for young people who come to the UK as refugees and asylum seekers. Here we speak to three inspirational students who came to the UK as UASC’s (unaccompanied asylum-seeking and refugee minors) about their journey to university with support from the Kent Refugee Action Network (KRAN).

Zara's Story: Applying to university with a mental health need

Zara Young, aged 19, from Faversham, is a student at the University of Kent. She is studying towards a degree in Psychology and plans to become a Clinical Psychologist.

2022 Social Mobility Foundation Programmes

The University of Kent has launched the Graham-Roger Global Citizen Prize, which may be of interest to some of our partner schools and colleges. Students in secondary schools and FE colleges across Kent and Medway are being invited to set out how they would change the world by designing their own essay, article, poem, speech, or video to show how they hope to make a difference. The deadline for entries is 10 April 2022.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: 
  • Year 10 – Tablet (equivalent to £300)
  • Year 11 – Tablet (equivalent to £300)
  • Year 12/13 - £1,000
Each category will also have a runner-up prize of a £100 gift voucher. For further details about the competition, including how to enter, visit the website.

Tech Girls Virtual Challenge 2022 "Tampon Terror!"

TechGirls will be running a virtual Challenge on Friday 11 February 2022 called "Tampon Terror!".  Aimed at Year 9, students will have the opportunity to learn about the environmental effects as a result of female sanitary products and will complete a challenge looking into how can technology solve this issue. The virtual Award Ceremony will be held on Thursday 10 March 2022.

Changing Perceptions Challenge 2021

A reminder that the UK Data Service is running an essay competition for UK sixth form and college students aged between 16 and 19. For those considering applying for university, the competition provides an opportunity to engage with academic research in preparation for undergraduate study. The deadline for entries is now Sunday 3 April 2022. For further details about the competition, including how to enter, please visit the UK Data Service website.

UCAS Webinar: Preparing for the 26 January Deadline 

Outreach North East have commissioned UCAS to deliver a series of webinars for teachers and advisers. The next webinar is being held at 4 pm on Tuesday 11 January and will be a Q&A session on preparing for the 26 January deadline. This is your chance to have your questions answered by UCAS and hear any key updates ahead of the equal considerations deadline. Register on the Outreach North East website.
