The war against Ukraine is not only the invasion of a sovereign country. It is an assault on the very values of democracy and open societies that CEU stands for. Russia’s brutal act of aggression violates all international norms and is inflicting enormous suffering.
CEU has more than 700 Ukrainian alumni, students, faculty, and staff. Right now, all are forced into making existential decisions: Where to take shelter; how to resist; how to keep their families safe?
Together we must — and will — come to their aid. Earlier we shared how CEU is mobilizing to support our affected community members, especially our students using my Presidential Discretionary Fund, and in cooperation with OSUN’s Threatened Scholars Initiative. We are nowback in touch to answerthequestionthat is exercising many of you:How can you be of assistance in this hour of need?
Here’s how.
Immediate needs: Our number one priority is the safety of our Ukrainian community. With refugees forced to flee to Hungary and across other neighboring borders, we need to extend CEU’s facilities and services. This includesusing our Budapestdormitory space for displaced alumni and their families.
To assist with housing and hardship support, please make a gift to the Emergency Fund.
If you wish to offer accommodation, employment possibilities, or any other direct support, please contact:development@ceu.edu.
Safe harbor for Ukrainian students: We anticipate that the financial hardship caused by this war will extend long into the future. That’s why we’ve established a new scholarship fund—with a goal to raise €750,000—to support 30 Ukrainian students for the next academic year.
Your gift to theUkraine Solidarity Fundwill provide full scholarships, inclusive of housing and living support, that will afford a safe environment for young Ukrainians to study at CEU.
If you wish to discuss a named scholarship opportunity as part of this fund, please contact Trisha Tanner:tannert@ceu.edu.
As this conflicttakes an untoldhumanitarian toll, each one of us is called upon to urgentlydoour part. Please feel free to contact me with any ideas that you may have in this regard.
Your support will help us meet the immediate needs of our Ukrainian students and alumni, while also providing an education rooted inopen societyprinciples – the brightest hope forour future.
At CEU, we're committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all our students and the wider CEU community. Right now, the need is greatest around the war in Ukraine. Everyone's help is essential.
