MESsage from the Branch Manager

As we have now entered the festive season – a season to be joyful regardless of how this year has been – allow me to show appreciation to our Creator for being with us till this time, for protecting us, and for keeping MES going even in the midst of the pandemic.

We all endured and gave it our all to ensure that lives are changed, and dignity is restored.

I appreciate everyone who gave, from our loyal long-term friends of MES, new donors and partnerships, our staff in all programmes and our clients for trusting MES and for being patient for change in this difficult time.
I believe that through the lessons learnt this year, we will continue doing better in our service delivery, and we pray to have more opportunities of external people wishing to be involved in facilitating our vision and mission to mould, empower and serve people holistically to live sustainable and meaningful lives.

I would like to encourage everyone to support our Christmas campaign, Packaged Love. By simply giving the less fortunate a Merry Christmas and putting a smile on their face this Christmas. Most will not have a family to share this day with or receive a Christmas gift for that matter.

Let me wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year. May God richly bless MES, its donors and partners, its staff and its clients and beneficiaries.

Be blessed!
Nicodemus Setshedi

MES and Gold Youth Peer education –  absorb 70 youth to become agents of community development

MES Johannesburg and GoldYouth have partnered in a programme that teaches young people the importance of positively influencing people around your community. This peer education initiative started on the 11th of November in the MES assessment centre in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.

GoldYouth’s primary focus is to test and scale the methodology of youth peer education where positive peer pressure is structured to bring about sustained community change through an “each-one-reach-one” approach. Read more!

Rosebank Sunday Market give hope to shelter women in business

During the COVID-19 lockdown period, the staff at MES Impilo Shelter realised that the shelter clients had immense creative talent. Through donations of wool, beads and sewing material the women started to produce various items.

On Friday, 28th August 2020, MES Johannesburg hosted a women’s day event for the shelter women, with aims to tap into what women can do to help themselves in identifying skills for survival.Read more!

Gigini Moyo jewellery seller

I used to live in the streets of Johannesburg before I moved to Impilo shelter. Before MES social workers took me off the streets, life was difficult having to worry about your next meal or a place to sleep and not to mention the cold nights and rainy days, the abuse we endured from the police and drug lords.

I lost hope in the system when I first came to Johannesburg to seek employment and things did not seem to go well for me. I ended up living in the streets of Jozi, eating food from garbage.
I was introduced to MES by one of the social workers about a month ago, told me about Impilo shelter and how I can change my life there. It has already been a month, but I can see my life progressing and all thanks to Tarryn who introduced me to the beading project and now I am able to sell my accessories outside Impilo Shelter.

The money that I get I am at least able to pay R20 for overnight shelter, sometimes it is difficult, but it is better than not doing anything with your time.Read more!

Packaged Love 2020

Every year between October and December, MES rolls out its Packaged Love campaign that aims to gift Christmas presents to our vulnerable and homeless communities in the inner cities of Johannesburg, Kempton Park, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. Packaged Love is based on the spirit of giving, spreading love to those who are less fortunate and particularly lonely during this festive season – the homeless community.
