MESsage from the Branch Manager

We are in the last month of this very unusual year, as we leave 2020 and enter 2021 with COVID-19, none of us know when we will wave goodbye to this pandemic that came to upset our normal way of living.

We hide ourselves behind masks, sanitise everything around us, hear about friends, family members and colleagues that are infected and impacted and some that succumbed to the virus.

Even though things are tough let us rejoice in the goodness, provision and protection of God over the last eight months. He is still alive and on the throne watching from heaven how we the church are starting to be the pillar of hope and strength for those around us.

For us at MES Kempton Park, amidst all the chaos and uncertainty, it has been a good year:

We became the proud owners of 6 Kempton Road.
During the lockdown we hosted a celebration service for our 10^th birthday on the 1^st of August attended by 50 people.
We had a successful Hope for Winter campaign, Mandela day and Heritage day.
On the 27^th of November a successful golf day was hosted to raise funds for our new After School Programme.

We are grateful to every loyal donor, friend and volunteer for enabling us to proceed with our programmes during this trying time. Our wish to you and your loved ones is to have much joy, love and peace during the festive season. May you have a good rest and embrace 2021 with hope and trust that God will be with us all.

MES Kempton Park Charity Golf Day raised thousands in rands for After School Programme (ASP)

MES Kempton Park has successfully hosted its annual Charity Golf Day to help sustain and improve its After School Programme (ASP) for the less fornunate pupils in the inner city. Friday, the 27th of November 2020, saw a hive of activity at the ERPM Golf Club in Boksburg as Friends of MES and individual volunteers participated in the golf day.

“It is a privilege to have finally hosted this event, as it had been postponed due to COVID-19 regulations. What is even more exciting is that this year our Kempton Park branch celebrates its 10th anniversary, so to be able to connect with our donors and supporters in this way was very special,” says MES Kempton Park branch manager, Helena van Blerk.

The MES Kempton Park branch was opened on 1 August 2010, after a group of concerned members of the community came together to address the increasing problem of homelessness and poverty in the inner city.

Our After School Programme - a safe space for learners after school

Homework and exam assistance is provided to poor and vulnerable children through the After School Programme. There are many children that roam the streets in the afternoons as their parent’s work or cannot afford the after- school facilities at the schools. Drugs and crime are pitfalls these young people often fall into because of unstable home environments.

Currently there are not many opportunities for after-school care in the inner city and this poses a real threat to the safety and development of the children/youth growing up in the inner city environment. Our facility can accommodate up to 18 children per day. A healthy body houses a healthy mind. Nutrition is a key activity of utmost importance in our after school programmes and a meal is also served to each child that attends.

Metsitec sponsor fire extinguishers to MES as part of Packaged Love

MES Kempton Park give thanks to Metsitec for kick-starting our Packaged Love campaign by sponsoring the installation of new fire extinguishers in the premises. Most definitely, such resources would enable a safe and progressive environment in ensuring that MES continue to change hearts of the most vulnerable and homeless community.

Packaged Love 2020

Every year between October and December, MES rolls out its Packaged Love campaign that aims to gift Christmas presents to our vulnerable and homeless communities in the inner cities of Johannesburg, Kempton Park, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. Packaged Love is based on the spirit of giving, spreading love to those who are less fortunate and particularly lonely during this festive season – the homeless community.

Become a MES Champion of Change when you pledge R100 per month!

Complete a debit order form for only R100 per month and become a Champion of Change. R100 can assist with any of the following:

Contribute towards our monthly operational costs (e.g. cleaning materials, meat expenses)
Sponsor a shelter client for 5 nights
Buy two reams of A4 printing paper for office use
Buy 50 black refuse bags to use at the recycling project
Buy 3kg frozen chicken or portions for our shelter meals
