MESsage from the Branch Manager

A deep conviction and desire to see a broken life become restored again is what brought me to MES, where I started as branch manager in July 2020. God is doing miraculous work in people’s lives and I want to be part of it.

As somebody who came out of a life of addiction and the streets, I take this as a personal journey and opportunity to help mould, empower and serve the homeless in the inner city of my hometown. It is a privilege and blessing from God.
In changing the heart of the city, I would like to see us taking hands with likeminded organisations in the city of Port Elizabeth and the Eastern Cape Province by displaying the heart of God for the homeless and for the lost and broken. I envision MES PE being a shining light of hope during people’s darkest moments as we lead them to Christ.

The impact that COVID-19 has had on the shelter has been huge and as we continue to battle the return of the pandemic in our city, I am hoping that MES will continue to play the role it has played through this difficult time; to bring hope and light to the vulnerable in our community.

The little time we had as lockdown levels and restrictions were relaxed, gave us a chance to see some life return to the shelter. We managed to get some programs going again, see volunteers getting involved, and have had networking opportunities with various churches being realised. The willingness of people in the city to get involved is a great encouragement, as well as the numerous stories of grace of the change in people’s lives.

Looking forward, I hope that by the grace of God, we will be able to see the projects we are working on come to fruition including our GROW project, the clothing store, and soup packing for the hungry. We hope for stronger ties to be fashioned with stakeholders, churches and to see growth taking place in our staff. We are praying for a blessing of funds to afford a bigger staff compliment to serve the needs of the homeless. We also hope to see more stories of grace come out of the work we are doing and for our clients to embrace the hope that is offered in Christ our saviour.

As Christmas draws closer, my hope is that in our communities and cities we will hear the cry of the hungry, the homeless and the lost, that God will birth within the hearts of people a desire to see the birth of Christ become a life-changing event for that person sleeping under a bridge, or the family losing their home. I hope that the new year will usher in a new attitude and heart in the city toward the vulnerable to the Glory of God.

MES bids farewell to Theresa Jaquire and welcomes new leadership

“I think the most valuable thing I learnt was that every person has a story, and that every person’s story is important. I must have patience with people and try to understand their story.  There are no quick fixes in life.  The Lord uses his children to Mould and Empower people while Serving!” writes MES Port Elizabeth Branch Manager, Theresa Jaquire, in her goodbye message to Friends of MES.

Jaquire joined MES Port Elizabeth in April 2013 as an Administration Officer.  Over the past seven years she was involved with finances, stats, the Winter Hope and Mandela Day campaigns, fundraising activities and visiting of churches.

Since the national lockdown was announced by President Ramaphosa, many businesses, entrepreneurs and organisations have severely suffered the consequences. It is for this reason that MES Port Elizabeth acknowledges the struggle that many businesses and individuals are facing amid the scourge of COVID-19 pandemic.

Over 2000 soup packages for the homeless in PE

MES Port Elizabeth has committed itself to preparing over 2000 soup packages for distribution to our most vulnerable and homeless community in the inner city.

During these difficult times, the branch has seen how families in the inner city have been struggling with such crushing poverty as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown.
“We have found it really burning at heart, in our service, to do something for those who are in need of support and love at this critical time. We thank God for blessing us with the means to prepare these parcels and pray that He fills those who will receive it,” said Abigail Spandiel, an intern within the Social Work Services at MES PE.
A story of hope
Arno Bester was a client of MES Port Elizabeth shelter from January 2019 to March 2020. Shaun Slabbert, a volunteer at MES Port Elizabeth, first engaged with Bester in 2018 during a telephonic conversation.

“I first met Arno telephonically in 2018. He reached out MES PE for help, after leaving another local shelter.  As I remember, the nature of the conversation was for him to figure out how to get back into what I can only refer to as 'work society'," remembers Slabbert.
After a rocky journey and losing his job due to drug relapse, Bester joined MES PE in January 2019. His life slowly started showing signs of improving and the MES team recognised his improvements. However, old habits started forming again and within 3 months he relapsed. This escalated and led him to leave the shelter and start living in the bushes near the shelter. Continue reading...
