Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the first newsletter of 2024!

From individual to team success and music making to the celebration of the Lunar New Year, pupils have had a busy start to the year. Particular congratulations to our U19 and U16 netball teams, who having won the Regional battle, have made it through the Nationals and our U16A girls' hockey team who have reached the quarter-finals of the National Cup.

Double Victory at 'Nottingham Young Musician of the Year'

Congratulations to two brilliant Upper School Music Scholars – horn player Joshua and soprano Evie.

Form 7 pupil Joshua won Nottingham Young Brass Player of the Year and the Bluecoat Singers Award, with Form 6 pupil Evie winning Nottingham Young Singer of the Year.
Celebrating Lunar New Year at Oakham School

We brought pupils together for a special Lunar New Year themed dinner and with the help of our Internationalism Decem delivered 16 gift hampers to all of our Houses, each one contained specially selected decorations and sweets chosen by some of our Chinese Oakhamians.
Pupils Receive Maths Olympiad Awards

Eight Oakhamians received Gold Awards in this year's UKMT Senior Maths Challenge.

Two pupils went even further, achieving Merit Awards in the follow-on competition, and two were awarded a Distinction and a Merit in the highly distinguished British Maths Olympiad.
Combining Sport and Languages 

Form 3 pupils enjoyed a fun and inspirational day – in the classroom and on the sports pitch – developing their vocabulary and language skills in French, German and Spanish through the medium of football.

A great way for pupils to gain an insight into the real-world application of foreign languages.
 
Alicia Kearns MP Politics Workshop

The Chair of the UK Foreign Affairs Committee (Alicia Kearns MP) led an engaging workshop with MUN and Politics students, giving them the opportunity to ask a range of questions on current affairs issues.
IB Students Complete Collaborative Sciences Project

Oakham School’s Form 6 IB Diploma Programme students have been working together to complete their Collaborative Sciences Project (CSP) and developing their scientific knowledge and skills in the process.
The Rise of the Degree Apprenticeship

To coincide with National Apprenticeship Week Caroline Atkinson, Oakham School’s Work Experience & Apprenticeships Officer, explores the increasing popularity of Degree Apprenticeships.
US University Honour for Ash

Following news of Ash's Ohio Hockey Scholarship, we are proud to share Ash has recently been accepted to the prestigious 'Honors Tutorial College' following a very challenging selection process. Around only eighty applicants are accepted each academic year, highlighting what a great achievement this is for Ash.
OO George Knight ('04) returns to Oakham School as a member of staff nearly two decades after leaving as a pupil.

We caught up with George to find out more about his role at Oakham and his unique connection with the School.
Drama

This half-term has been all go in the Drama Department.

Lower School pupils demonstrated polished performances in their drama and dance showcases. Form 1 explored the stimulus 'Around the World' which features Safari Tales, whilst Form 2 focused on the idea 'We are the World,' delving into how we can look after the world as well as each other. 

Pupils took the lead at the Oakham School Arts Festival as they produced and showcased their own work ranging from scripted and improvised theatre, musical theatre, film and animation to single or group stand-up routines and sketches.

The Drama Department is also preparing for the upcoming Drama Scholars' production of Steel Magnolias from 4 - 7 March - email for tickets.

 
Music

A busy half term of music has seen a superb series of pupil lunchtime recitals given by Nicola, Safi, George and Ethan in All Saints’ Church.

The Chamber Choir excelled in its annual Brandenburg Festival Concert in London, and many of our solo singers participated in a superb Singing Competition on Sunday 4 February.

Mr Foster’s All Star Big Band set the standard for non-classical music this term with a well-attended Chapel Concert on 18 January, and our first Open Mic night in 1584 on Thursday 8 February was a great success.
 
Art

The Art scholars had a valued talk and workshop led by artist Amanda Davies.  Amanda brought in lots of her work to show the students, sharing with them her inspirations as well as tips on how to play with ideas and materials.

Form 7 Art and Critical and Contextual Studies students took the train to London to kickstart their Externally Set Assignment. The visit was a chance for the students to draw, take photos and make notes to take back to the classroom to help them develop their own work.

Lower School impressed in their Art Exhibition displayed in the Smallbone Library. The School was treated to a range of ideas, materials and techniques.

Oakhamians Reach the National Netball Finals

Both the U16A and the 1st VII Netball teams have made it through to Nationals.

Continued Success for Form 5 Swimmer Jacob

Jacob wins Leicestershire and Rutland Men's Swimmer of the Year along with Fastest Freestyle of the Year.

National Quarter-Finals for our U16A Hockey Team

The Girls' U16A hockey team were victorious over Surbiton in the National Cup round of 16, cementing their place in the quarter-finals.

London - La Casa de Bernarda

A group of eleven Form 7 language pupils made the trip to the Cervantes theatre in London.




 
London - A Trip to Parliament

Form 5 Citizenship pupils enjoyed an action-packed and informative day in London visiting Parliament and Europe House, to help them with their GCSE exam preparation.


 
Form 3 Battlefields Trip

Each year all pupils from Form 3 take part in a moving trip to the World War 1 battlefields of northern France.

Lower School

Oakham’s Lower School pupils have enjoyed a highly sociable start to the new year with lots of themed socials and house fun throughout this half-term.
Middle and Upper School

Middle and Upper School Houses have had a busy half of the Spring Term, with lots of socials, trips and events - some much needed downtime for our Form 5
