The PiXL Maths App is a resource that puts the power of PiXL in the hands of the people that can make a difference...YOU!
Whether you are a member of staff or a student, the tool enables you to identify strengths and areas to develop within the Mathematics curriculum.
The app has been specifically built to not only identify areas of strength and weakness, but to also effectively display this information to all stakeholders. From this information that app can suggest a plan to work on the areas to develop with the support of video tutorials, notes and key feedback from staff.
The app also contains an innovative QLA system that collates information about the performances of all pupils in a written paper and produces the results in a range of different ways; from pupil reports, workbooks, and feed forward tasks.
One of the strongest parts of the app is the ability to promote engagement. The built in scoreboard feature enables schools to quickly monitor the use both at staff and student level.
Saving teachers time is paramount!
Secondary Schools
All students will need to be first added to the central database (https://appusers.pixl.org.uk). You will need to upload a list of all students and assign them to a subject and class to allow them to access specific apps (at least a Geography class to access this app).
Once you have uploaded your students
Having assigned students to classes and distributed the login information, everyone should now be able to login to the app.
Are there any helpful resources to help me launch the site with my students?
Launch PowerPointHOME PAGE EXPLAINED
After logging in, you will be redirected to the home screen. Both staff and students see a similar home screen so the staff account can be used to model how students would be expected to use the app. Below are the instructions to the staff home screen:
TAKE A TEST
From the home screen, staff and students can design their own online assessments. From the drop down menus, users can choose the topics that they wish to focus on before beginning the test. Within a test users will be given a full screen question with the following options:
STAFF ANALYSIS EXPLAINED
From all activity within the app, all data is stored under a student's profile and is made accessible to staff under the "Class analysis" option on the home screen:
Selecting a specific cell will bring up an indepth overview of the performance within this given skill across all 6 stars:
HOW DOES A STAFF MEMBER SET A HOMEWORK TASK?
On the home screen, there is the option of "Set a new task" and this will bring up the menu to select what you would like to set as a homework and more importantly to who. The who can be an individual, a group or an entire year group. The what can be anything found under the "Take a test". To begin to set a homework, select the students you would like to set the homework to using the filters. Next select the topics and skills using the filters. You can select more than 1 topic and activity at a time. Please be aware that a student can only receive 1 set of tasks at a time so it is important that all activities that you want to set as a homework are set in one go. Setting another homework task will replace the previous one issued. To view the results of a homework task, select "View task results" under the homework section on the home screen. The following screen will then be displayed:
PAPER QLA EXPLAINED
On the home screen, there is the option of "QLA" for you to be able to analyse written paper performance. From the list of templates, select the one you wish to analyse or alternatively, you can create your own template using the onscreen instructions. Once the template has loaded, you will see a data entry screen. Either staff can enter the results for each question and each student or students can enter their own results and it will appear in the staff student register view (example shown below). From this a range of activities can be generated that focuses on moving every child forward, e.g. an online homework task based on their 5 weakest areas, a workbook that works on collective areas of weakness or a personalised FF report that outlines the full list of results but also shows two FF questions for each student:
Analysing gaps couldn't be easier. With the options in the top right hand corner of the screen, the system will carefully pull out the weakest areas from any mapped skills to the PiXL Maths app skills bank and also produce a summary graph as shown below:
How might you use the data during a parent's evening?
From the home screen, staff have the parent consultation tool. This tool collates all of the information about a specific student into 1 interface. Selecting the option from the home screen, use the filters to refine the list of students to a specific class. Selecting a name will bring up an interface similar to the one below:
How do you monitor engagement?
Whenever a student accesses and completes a specific online question, they will receive an engagement point. Whilst the result of their engagement can be viewed through the "Class analysis" section described above, the points are conveyed via the "Score" option on the home screen. Selecting this option will produce a group and a list of pupils based on the chosen filters based on points collated this week/last week/all time. You will also be presented with the options to export the information as a certificate, as a PDF report or as an Excel document.
Is it possible to access the therapy material outside of the app?
Yes. All videos can be accessed via The Vision Box and all notes can be found on mathswhiteboard.com.
What if I want to reset engagement points or progress data from an app?
The central database tool has a wealth of tools to assist you in managing your data. Here you can manage everything relating to your student accounts.
